Introducing Our Research Ambassadors
|
|
We are excited to announce that 19 senior researchers all over Australia have been selected to serve as DAAD Research Ambassadors for the 2020/2021 academic year.
DAAD Research Ambassadors are scholars and scientists in Australia who have conducted advanced long-term research projects in Germany and promote now research in Germany at their home universities and among their peers and students.
Mid-September 2019, the 2020/21 Research Ambassadors participated in a two-day seminar addressing:
- the latest developments in German higher education and research
- as well as the funding programmes available to Australian scientists
- academics interested in conducting research in Germany or initiating collaborative projects with German colleagues.
They have now returned to their respective campuses, where they will serve as liaisons for DAAD in Australia to promote research opportunities in Germany among their colleagues, peers and students.
DAAD Research Ambassadors help to inspire others to conduct research in Germany by working within their departments and serving as a resource to university offices (e.g. the international, fellowship and career development offices).
They are also available to answer questions from students and peers from beyond their geographic areas via email.

The first high-ranking delegation from institute heads of the Leibniz Association visited Australia (Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra & Sydney) in February 2020 to extend existing collaborations and explore new collaborations and funding opportunities for collaborative research.
The research marketing events, co-organized by the DAAD Information Centre, on the German research landscape and the Leibniz Association at universities in Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney aimed at postgraduates and young researchers and were well attended despite relatively short notice. An average of 15-20 local students and scientists took part in the events.
Subject-specific workshops made it possible for Leibniz researchers to exchange information intensively with Australian cooperation partners and young scientists to prepare new bilateral projects. Round-tables with representatives from Australian ministries, funding agencies, and research organisations gave the delegation a comprehensive insight into the Australian research and funding landscape, whereby some concrete opportunities for bilateral exchange were identified.
Under the banner of the Australia-Germany Research Network (AGRN), the German embassy held a networking reception for the delegation in Canberra. The networking event in Sydney was organized by the DAAD Information Centre Sydney, together with the General Consulate Sydney and the German-Australian Chamber of Commerce, in the premises kindly provided by UNSW
These events provided another unique opportunity for productive networking discussions between the delegation members and the invited guests: Australian representatives from science, research and industry. In a short lecture, A / Prof Clemens Ulrich, UNSW / DAAD Research Ambassador spoke about his current bilateral research projects, which demonstrated excellent examples of German-Australian research cooperation.

This Edition's Snippet of Germany
Rhineland Carnival Festivities with focus on the EU - Celebrating Beethoven's 250th Birthday Year!
This year, all four of the ''Big Rose Monday' Carnival parades in the Rhineland have come together to feature a large European-Union themed float of Ludwig van Beethoven.
Some might ask, why is the Beethoven float also EU themed? Unbeknownst to some, "Ode to Joy" by Beethoven, is the official chosen anthem of the European Union. Born in 1770 in Bonn, he upheld values of freedom and equality, expressed through his music. These values very much represent what the European Union strives for today, and also expresses the the same overarching ideas of togetherness as the Carnival Celebrations
