How To Keep Your Pet Safe From Cannabis Poisoning

With the legalization of cannabis in parts of the United States, we have seen an increase in marijuana poisoning in our patients. Recreational and medical cannabis is available in a wide range of products such as smokables, oils, and edibles, which can increase the chance of pet exposure. Many people may not realize that prescription medical cannabis products contain not only the CBD (cannabidiol) but a high level of THC which is harmful to pets.

Can Cats and Dogs Get Along?

If you were to go by all the talk about "dog people" versus "cat people," you'd think that everyone had to choose one and stick to it. They don't, of course; plenty of us have both cats and dogs and despite their differences, it seems to work out. If you want to ensure a good relationship, though, science says to focus on the cat's needs.

A recent study surveyed owners mostly in the United Kingdom and the United States, asking detailed questions about how their cats and dogs got along. The majority of the 748 owners thought their pets had pretty good relationships. On a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 was "can't stand each other" and 10 was "close companions," few ratings of 4 and below were found.

Why I Love My Pet Contest Finalists and Winners

Many of us have been lucky enough to share a special bond with one or more pets. Each one has something special and unique about them. So we asked - "Why do you love your pet?" in our first ever "Why Do You Love Your Pet" original artwork contest.

We were very impressed with all the talented artists who submitted artwork and what makes their pet special.  We wanted to share our finalists and their inspirations.

Breaking the Stereotype: Positive Basket Muzzle Training
  • Saturday, April 20th, 2019  starting at 11:30 am
  • Location: Animal Hospital of North Asheville Education Room
  • Presented by Tristan Rehner-Fleurant, MS, CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, CBATI of Pet Behavior Aid
  • People Only.
  • No Registration required. No fee to attend. Everyone welcome!
It's time to eliminate the negative associations with muzzles and learn all the good muzzles can do.

Muzzles can be a lifesaver (preventing dogs from eating things off the ground and to avoid a foreign body surgery), a training tool (great for gentle handling, especially near the face), a behavior modification tool, and a piece of safety equipment (for use during vet visits, on walks, and transporting or treating a dog who has suffered a traumatic event). And with proper training, it can be low stress and fun for your dog to wear.
