Science Communication: Conflict Management
Conflict management training for graduate students, early career scientists, and all others welcome!
No one ever said communication in a science arena was uncomplicated! Conflicts abound and can be intense, passionate, frustrating, stressful, and sometimes overwhelming! In the lab, in the field, at a meeting, at a conference, with lab-mates, co-workers, professors, administrators, the media, regulators, politicians, funders—the scientific landscape is fraught with potential conflict, but fertile ground for mediation and negotiation.
Conflict management and negotiation involves both one's head and heart. No matter how hard you try to stay rational, emotions often get in the way of effective resolutions. In the Science Communication: Conflict Management Workshop, Southern Miss Communications graduate students address how to deal with negative emotions and stimulate positive emotions to facilitate conflict management. This is a 2-hour interactive session where you learn about the 5 core concerns to remember in conflict management. The workshop includes short lectures, group activities, case study analyses, and mini-role playing. You will recognize how to move beyond reason and use positive emotions to help reach a wise agreement.
Refreshments and lunch included!
Please register by sending your name, email, and school to: guntergcrl@usm.edu

Graduate Student Appreciation
Ice Cream Social
No fooling! On April 1, Gunter Library partnered with the Division of Coastal Sciences (COA) to host an ice cream social for COA graduate students. The event featured three flavors of ice cream, toppings, fruit, and fun! A scavenger hunt created by Library Coordinator Maryanne Anthony, challenged the 15+ people who attended. The grand prize, a beautiful basket made by Library Assistant Martha Brown and filled to the top with USM branded items, summer fun toys, and Easter candy was shared by the two winners Meg Oshima and Melissa Brock who are shown below.

Seven Live Oaks Planted on GCRL Campus
|
In March, seven live oak trees donated by the Rotary Club of Ocean Springs were planted along the emergency access road and in front of the Director’s House. These trees replace trees taken for the installation of the emergency access road in May 2018. Head Librarian Joyce Shaw worked with Rotary Club of Ocean Springs for this gift. The donation was part of Rotary International’s challenge to plant 1.2 million trees around the world. A crew of Southern Miss groundskeepers planted the trees.

Genetics is the study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity in living organisms. Dr. De Castro, Associate Director of the Air Force Medical Genetics Center, is a physician and scientist. He was instrumental in diagnosing a local child, Willow Cannan, with a very rare fatal genetic disease called Multiple Sulfatase Deficiency (MSD). MSD leaves her body unable to get rid of the natural cellular waste our bodies produce each day. Dr. De Castro will be joined by Willow’s mother, Amber Olsen who has started the United MSD Foundation in order to raise funds to provide treatment options to children diagnosed with this disease. Come find out more about the role of genetics in diagnosing diseases such as Willow’s.
