This Just In...
We went red.
We wanted the beauty of the fall to continue, unabated.
Yes, we enjoy a day or two of blustery winds that force you to zip your jacket, even pull down that wool cap over your one good ear. But, no, sorry. We want to hold on to the sweet smells of autumn, though we know November will bring with it an icy change.
Sorry. Didn't have breakfast this morning, blood sugar must be low.
How 'bout spending a few minutes with us, 'cause...This Just In...

On September 1, Colchester's Reliable Oil became part of the Daniels Energy family. Cliff O'Donal, founder and owner of Reliable has, after 30 years, decided to retire. He gave serious thought to whom he would sell his company and after deliberate consideration called David and Bob Daniels.
"
The Daniels Family has been a family-owned for more than 91 years and David, Bob and John Daniels still work every day side-by-side with their staff. You are treated like a member of the family," said O'Donal. "I have total confidence that my customers will be well taken care of and very much appreciated," he added.
They all agreed to maintain the name and dedication to customer service that Reliable has built over three decades. Daniels is delighted to welcome Reliable customers. We'll work hard to continue to deserve your patronage.

Don't Walk This Way
"
Flower Bowl" shoes from the 19th century in China. These shoes were used to imitate the walk of women with bound feet.
Foot-binding had been performed on women in China since medieval times, but was fading from prominence by the 19th century and had never caught on among some ethnic groups, including the ruling Manchus of the Qing Dynasty. The fashion for a "dainty" and "feminine" gait, however, had not faded - hence these shoes.

Who You Calling A Scientist?
Mary Somerville was a self-taught polymath, with a deep knowledge of math, astronomy, and geology - just to name a few. She published her treatise,
On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences
, in 1834.
The scientific historian William Whewell read Somerville's treatise and loved it. He wanted to write a glowing review. He encountered a problem, however: the term at the time for such an author would have been "man of science," and that just didn't fit Somerville.
So Whewell did something that would put his name in the history books. He decided to call Somerville a "scientist." He intended the term to show the interdisciplinary nature of Somerville's treatise.
Not just a mathematician, astronomer, or physicist, Somerville had the knowledge and intellect to weave them all together. He invented a gender-neutral term that would become more popular than the term Whewell was trying to work around.
Somerville might have had something to do with the popularity of "scientist." She wrote nine subsequent editions of
On the Connexion of the Physical Sciences
, updating it for the rest of her life.
These were not purely academic endeavors; they led to material changes. In the third edition, for instance, Somerville wrote that difficulties in calculating Uranus's position may indicate the existence of an undiscovered planet. This led to the discovery of Neptune.

World History Facts:
Harvesting ice on a Maine lake, 1925. For much of the 19th and early 20th centuries, there was a thriving trade in ice from the lakes of New England to places around the world - as far as Singapore.
The ice trade allowed an early version of refrigerated shipping, allowing fresh foods to be transported all over the globe. What did they use to refrigerate the ice they were sending places? More ice? Yes.
They basically packed the ice tight, insulating it with sawdust, to keep it cold. Still, the ships made it to the south with less than half the ice they started with

She who must be obeyed (the spouse of 100 years) does the crossword puzzle daily. Explains the mumbling, but I digress. She seems a bit more ornery late in the week and I wondered. Now I know. It wasn't that I hadn't taken out the trash. It was the...crossword puzzles!!!

Winter Landscape with Ice Skaters by HendrickAvercamp 1608 |
Hendrick Avercamp
(1585 -1634 was a
Dutch
painter. Avercamp was born in
Amsterdam
, where he studied with the Danish-born portrait painter
Pieter Isaacks
(1569-1625). In 1608 he moved from Amsterdam to
Kampen
in the province of
Overijssel
. Avercamp was
deaf
and was known as "de Stomme van Kampen" (the mute of Kampen).
As one of the first landscape painters of the 17th-century Dutch school, he specialized in painting the Netherlands in winter. Avercamp's paintings are colorful and lively, with carefully crafted images of the people in the landscape.
Avercamp's work enjoyed great popularity and he sold his drawings, many of which were tinted with water-color, as finished pictures to be pasted into the albums of collectors.
