OHEART Fellows conclude training at Ohio State

The end of 2019 marked the conclusion of training for four fellows in the One Health Eastern Africa Research Training (OHEART) program at Ohio State. Supported by the National Institutes of Health Fogarty, this program strengthens capacity of four eastern African academic institutes located in Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania through a PhD and post-doctoral fellowship program, where candidates spend 1.5 years at Ohio State and 2.5 years at their home university.

National One Health Awareness Month in the United States

On December 19, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution designating January 2020 as "National One Health Awareness Month: in the United States to promote scientific collaboration between public, animal and environmental health. This represents a key step in our collective and renewed commitment to the One Health approach, which brings together multiple disciplines working locally, nationally and globally to address the spread of disease, promote health and emphasize the connection among humans, animals and the environment.

Successful U.S. government accountability office visit in Addis Ababa

On December 10, GOHis regional team presented a progress update to a Centers for Disease Control (CDC-Ethiopia) and U.S. embassy interoffice delegation whose mission was to better understand our collective contributions to the Global Health Security Agenda investment at the country level.

Goff to implement Antibiotic Stewardship Program in low middle income countries

Debra Goff PharmD, FIDSA, FCCP founding member of the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ASP) was selected by the World Health Organization to implement ASP in low middle income countries. She is the only U.S. pharmacist out of 25 global experts. Goff, along with two Centers for Disease Control physicians and one other infectious diseases physician represent the United States team.

GOHi welcomes new team member

Zelalem Mekuria has joined GOHi as a postdoctoral researcher and genotyping coordinator within GOHi partnership. Mekuria received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Addis Ababa University in 2008. He practiced for three years in Ethiopia before he moved to Australia for postgraduate training and research, where he earned a PhD from the University of Melbourne. His area of research is applied genomic and bioinformatics approaches to study infectious disease agents in horses.

Save the date: November 5-6, 2020 Global One Health Conference

One of GOHi's outreach capacity building goal is to convene workshops and conferences that serve as knowledge-sharing and networking platforms. Biennially, GOHi convenes the Global One Health conference in Columbus, Ohio during the first week of November marking One Health Day, which takes place on November 3. Together with diverse campus and global partners, GOHi aims to convene its 2020 conference on November 5-6 at the Ohio Union located on Ohio State's campus. We will bring together local, regional, national and international scientists and policy-makers to address key priority global capacity building issues.
