Hurricane Helper
to the Rescue
|
|
"I wanted to be generous and live to give."
- 6-year-old Jermaine Bell
Those could very well be the words of a
future community action practitioner.
Hurricane Dorian created lots of panic and havoc as it made its way through the Carolina's - and rightly so, considering the damage left behind. However, invariably, in the mist of devastation and calamity, emerge stories that inspire us and bring out the very best in people - case in point, 6 year-old Jermaine Bell. Just in case you missed this heart- warming story, Jermaine stood on the side of the road holding two handcrafted signs to get the attention of people driving out of the city.
According to
CNN
, this little boy from South Carolina could have held out for a trip to the "happiest place on Earth" but instead decided to help Hurricane Dorian evacuees. Jermaine Bell used the money saved for a birthday trip to Disney World’s Animal Kingdom to buy hundreds of hot dogs, chips and water for people who were leaving their homes in anticipation of the storm, ABC affiliate
WJBF
reported. This little hurricane-helper served more than 100 evacuees in just one day.

HEALTHCARE
Community Action –
Stay Connected with NCCARE360
|
|
Let’s get straight to the point. All NC Community Action agencies should be registered and active users of NCCARE360. Why?
- Because the it is the first and only statewide coordinated resource network.
- It is endorsed by the NC DHHS and is a major component of North Carolina’s current healthcare transformation efforts.
- Soon, health care and human service providers will use NCCARE360 to communicate client needs, make referrals, and track client outcomes.
- It includes a statewide resource directory to seamlessly make client referrals and track outcomes.
- It creates a streamlined process for connecting clients with services and resources. For example, pilot data indicates the platform’s success in meeting client needs more quickly by reducing the amount of time between intake and service provision.
NCCARE360 is currently fully launched in 15 counties, being introduced in 30 counties, and will be fully statewide by December, 2020.

JLHCA Head Start Staff Try to Survive
1 Month In Poverty
|
|
|
NCCAA recently traveled to Dunn, NC to provide two back-to-back poverty simulations for the Head Start staff at Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action, Inc. The all-day experience proved to be a powerful one for all participants.
Staff from Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action also volunteered as service providers. The day proved to be insightful for all by highlighting many of the struggles faced by the families they serve. Both poverty simulations ended with insightful debriefing sessions. Head start staff serving children and families across all counties walked away with a charge to remember the poverty simulation experience as they work to build even more compassion and empathy, not only with their clients but also with each other.

Health is more than a number on the scale, and in order to have good health it is imperative to live in a healthy environment that allows you to make healthy choices. For many people in this country this is a struggle, however, there are some organizations creating needed change.
These efforts of change have come in the form of an app, community development, wellness programs, disease prevention, environmental justice, policy changes, and created coalitions. Because of their success in these programs, some have been replicated in other communities.

Helping People, Changing Lives
"I am legally blind. If you have COPD and you have carpet, it's the worst thing for you because the carpet has so many allergens. They came out and did an assessment and as you can see, they pulled up the carpet and put me down this new floor. I can get around so much better in my wheel chair."
Story reported by Steve Herring, Goldsboro News-Argus, Tuesday, September 3, 2019
Chronic obstructive pulminary disease (COPD) is aggravated by the dust and allergens found in carpet. The Blue Cross/Blue Shield Healthy Homes Program is making a huge difference for people like Belinda and Sylvester White of Fremont. The Whites are quick to recommend the program, administered in their county by Patricia Beier, Executive Director for

IMBALANCED
What Is
Racial Equity?
|
|
“Racial equity is about applying justice and a little bit of common sense to a system that’s been out of balance. When a system is out of balance, people of color feel the impacts most acutely, but, to be clear, an imbalanced system makes all of us pay.”
~ CSI President Glenn Harris
Since 2011, the Center for Social Inclusion(CSI) has worked with social scientists to figure out the best strategies to talk about race in order to move a broad base of people to support racially equitable policy solutions. They train grassroots leaders, community-based organizations, advocacy and philanthropic organizations, and government to talk about race effectively in order to move a policy agenda that can create shared prosperity in our neighborhoods, states, and nation. Their aim is to unite community organizing and advocacy with cutting-edge social science research to create effective communications strategies for those working to make racial equity a reality.
CSI, employs four interlocking strategies to advance racial equity. Strategies are applied in different regions across the country, so that all people, particularly people of color, can achieve their greatest potential and fully participate in the creation and sustenance of thriving, inclusive, interconnected, and economically self-determined communities.
The interaction of these four strategies forms the heart of their theory of change.
Explore the four
strategies
using the links below.
Policy & Research
Working with community groups, government, and national organizations to develop policies that advance racial equity.
Talking About Race

The excitement of watching soccer is special.... but now, thanks to new research led by the University of Leeds, it gets even better.
The recent study, due to be released soon, suggests watching your beloved soccer team romp home to victory has a positive impact on your health, with spectators experiencing physical stresses equivalent to going for a brisk 90-minute walk.
