On April 4, in T-Mobile West v. City and County of San Francisco, the California Supreme Court issued an opinion upholding a San Francisco ordinance imposing certain aesthetic standards on wireless facilities within the city.
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office announced on April 11 a partnership with cities to develop affordable housing on excess state lands.
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month in California, and this year, the Legislature has designated April 24 as Denim Day California, a day in which individuals are encouraged to wear jeans to communicate the message that there is never an excuse, or invitation to commit, sexual assault.
Opportunities for Cities

With the passage of Prop. 68, there is approximately $102 million in funding grants from the California Department of Parks and Recreation, and each city is entitled to $200,000 in grants.

The League’s co-sponsorship of the California Statewide Communities Development Authority continues to be one of the most significant benefits for League members.

The United States Department of Agriculture announced that it will begin accepting applications for its broadband funding pilot program, ReConnect, on April 23. Eligible applicants for the mix of grants and loans include cities, internet service providers and rural electric co-ops.

Legislative hearings are in full swing, and the Legislature continues to discuss policy areas of interest to cities. The Legislature will return on April 22, and the Governor’s May Budget Revise is fast approaching. In addition, April 26 is the last day for policy committee to hear and report to fiscal committees on fiscal bills introduced in their house of origin.
