Spring Into Adventure: 8-Week National Challenge
This spring we’ve pulled together a fun and comprehensive campaign to keep our youth and Scouters active and engaged now that the warmer weather is finally here!

We have integrated three separate and parallel streams:
  1. The centrepiece of this campaign is the 8-week challenge for youth and sections.
  2. Not wanting to leave out our Scouters, we have integrated Scouter Development specific activities to help support the youth while adults can learn by doing along the way.
  3. Finally, our Group Commissioner’s and Group Support Scouters, often the forgotten support heroes, we have a stream for you. Get together with your peers and benefit from networking and specialist support dedicated for your needs.
2020 & 2021 Top Section Awards Procedure
As many of you are aware, the Top Section Award Ceremony traditionally held by Nova Scotia Council did not occur last year due to Covid-19. All our award recipients from last year are well deserving of their awards and we would like to make sure that they are recognized. On behalf of Council, I would like to extend our sincerest congratulations. At this point in time, we are unable to hold a large ceremony; however, that does not mean our youth cannot be recognized for their incredible achievements at the group level. Group Commissioners, with the help of Section Scouters and the Section Leadership Teams, are encouraged to present Top Section Awards for any level. Usually, we would advise groups to present the certificate and crest for junior sections and just the crest for senior sections, but we will be encouraging all sections to present both the certificate and crest at this time. The certificates can be found at the following links for Beavers and Cubs, while for the senior sections, we will mail the certificates out. Please fill out the below form to receive certificates for youth in the senior sections. We are hopeful that this summer we may be able to hold a ceremony or multiple smaller ceremonies to recognize the accomplishments of our youth from both this year and last year, but in the meantime, we wish each and every award recipient the best. Congratulations! If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected].
Miller Lake Park is re-opening!
Miller Lake Park (MLP), located in Fall River NS off of Perrin Dr., is a 82 hectare portion of Nova Scotia Crown Land that has been used by Scouting for as long as Scouting has existed in our province. The property is managed by 12 Scouting Groups that own, maintain and operate their respective Cabins scattered on the Mainland portion of our site. The Soldier’s Lake portion of our property (on the South side of Perrin Dr) provides hiking trails, wilderness tenting sites and easy access to the trails surrounding Soldier’s Lake and the rest of the Waverly Game Sanctuary.

At the start of COVID-19 pandemic Scouts Canada closed all Scout properties until such time as the property could be operated safely within Scouts Canada property COVID-19 protocols and local Health regulations. The MLP Operating Committee has developed new operating procedures and guidelines in compliance with these requirements. We have a few steps to complete before we can announce an opening date but we are close.

When we do re-open, the Park will provide our 12 Cabin Holders and their youth the facility for day use activities such as hiking and Scouting Skills development supported by the Groups Cabins and their equipment such as stoves, lanterns, axes and campfire circles. Overnight camping for Groups and Sections will be accommodated when permitted by Health Nova Scotia. We will also be able to share our park and its facilities with all Scouting Groups via Scouts Canada Double-Knot rental web site. To find out more about Miller Lake Park and how to book your rental, click the button below.

Contact us to find out how your Group can join the Miller Lake Park family. We have several cabins, that with some work, can become your Group’s new outdoor activity center.

Top Section Awards FAQ
How does a youth apply for the Top Section Award?
A youth who believes that he or she has achieved the Top Section Award
should make a presentation to the Section Leadership Team to explain how he or she has fulfilled the Top Section Award’s criteria.

Who approves a youth’s application for the Top Section Award?
The Section Leadership Team (made up of youth) approves a youth’s application for the Top Section Award. Scouters should be present for deliberations to answer any questions the Section Leadership Team may have. Scouters may also provide the best advice they have to offer; however, the final decision of whether or not a youth has achieved the Top Section Award should rest with the Section Leadership Team.
