National Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Pendleton Place is proud to partner with Children's Trust of South Carolina,  the state's affiliate organization for Prevent Child Abuse, to break generational cycles of abuse through early intervention and prevention efforts.

After more than 45 years of involvement in child abuse cases, Pendleton Place knows the importance of reducing risk factors and promoting protective factors within
households. Why? Because the key to preventing child abuse is building stable, healthy, well-connected families. Protective factors are conditions in families and communities that, when present, increase the health and well-being of children and families. Protective factors serve as buffers, helping parents who might otherwise be at risk of abusing their children to find resources, supports, or coping strategies that allow them to parent effectively, even under stress.

The impact of child abuse is profound. Research demonstrates a close connection between childhood abuse and negative health and mental health outcomes later in life, and this association is a costly one! One analysis of the immediate and long-term economic impact of child abuse and neglect suggests that child maltreatment costs the nation as much as $258 million each day, or approximately $94 billion each year.

For more information on child abuse prevention, check out the Children's Bureau website, which has great resources and suggestions on how to get involved. Everyone has a role to play in ending child abuse. By raising awareness, supporting community programs, and advocating for strong families, we can enact change in our community and better the lives of the children within.

National Summit on Youth Homelessness

Our Directors of Youth and Residential Services recently attended the  National Summit on Youth Homelessness . At the  National Network for Youth 's sixth annual event, our team members were equipped with information on preventing and responding to youth homelessness that we are confident will change and inform our the new services that Pendleton Place has in store for 2019.

"Being able to attend the National Summit on Youth Homelessness was such a great experience. The opportunity to hear from professionals all over the nation who are already doing great work with youth at risk for or currently experiencing homelessness was invaluable to our current efforts with the Youth Resource Center and the Emergency Shelter. The contacts we were able to gain will assist with ongoing efforts with our two new programs," said our Director of Residential Services, Halla Banafa.
