National Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Pendleton Place is proud to partner with Children's Trust of South Carolina,
the state's affiliate organization for
Prevent Child Abuse,
to break generational cycles of abuse through early intervention and prevention efforts.
After more than 45 years of involvement in child abuse cases, Pendleton Place knows the importance of reducing risk factors and promoting protective factors within

households. Why? Because the key to preventing child abuse is building stable, healthy, well-connected families. Protective factors are conditions in families and communities that, when present, increase the health and well-being of children and families. Protective factors serve as buffers, helping parents who might otherwise be at risk of abusing their children to find resources, supports, or coping strategies that allow them to parent effectively, even under stress.
The impact of child abuse is profound. Research demonstrates a close connection between childhood abuse and negative health and mental health outcomes later in life, and this association is a costly one! One analysis of the immediate and long-term economic impact of child abuse and neglect suggests that child maltreatment costs the nation as much as $258 million each day, or approximately $94 billion each year.
For more information on child abuse prevention, check out the
Children's Bureau website, which has great resources and suggestions on how to get involved. Everyone has a role to play in ending child abuse. By raising awareness, supporting community programs, and advocating for strong families, we can enact change in our community and better the lives of the children within.
