Antonio Lucio
Vivaldi, born in Venice in 1678, is one of the most popular of all baroque composers. He was a priest, music teacher and virtuoso violinist, who composed many sacred scores for the Ospedale Orphanage in Venice, where he spent most of his career. It is also where hundreds of his instrumental concertos were performed by the girls' orchestra. During his lifetime he enjoyed considerable success and fortune, which he squandered through extravagance. When he died in Vienna in 1741, he was buried in a pauper's grave. Two centuries after his death, his Gloria lay undiscovered until the late 1920s, when it was found buried among a pile of forgotten Vivaldi manuscripts. Still, it was not performed until September 1939 in Siena.
Gloria in excelsis Deo or Glory to God in the highest is an early Christian hymn which begins with the Christmas proclamation which the angels sang to the shepherds over the hillside of Bethlehem. The hymn, however, quickly moves into a confession of faith. It is an example of a private psalm that was composed in the 2nd and 3rd century. In the historic, Lutheran Liturgy it has traditionally be sung after the Kyrie. Vivaldi's Gloria is a joyful hymn of praise and worship divided into 12 relatively brief movements, ranging from festive brilliance to profound sadness.
The Lake of the Isles Church Choir will conclude its regular sing season with a performance of Vivaldi's Gloria on Sunday, May 19th. Soloists Laurel Drevlw and Deb Gilroy, as well as small chamber ensemble will accompany the choir for a festive performance.

Palm Sunday Pancake Breakfast Success!
The Palm Sunday pancake breakfast was very successful with over 125+ people served. Thank you to Thrivent Financial for their financial assistance, Don Holzschuh and Jake Kunerth for their expertise in cooking pancakes and sausages, Diane LaMere along with Sunday School students Ella Sarles, Nick Messerli, Ben Mechels, Clayton Kunerth, Murphy Kappel, Winnie and Jack Ulland and Dominic Amann.for help with the serving, and Chris Hovda, Jacob Hovda, Justin and Stephanie Kappel for washing dishes and cleaning up. We raised $698 for scholarships to Luther Park Summer Camp for LOTI children. Thank you for making it such a successful fundraiser.

Our Saviour's Housing Shelter Meals
Lake of the Isles Lutheran Church has provided a meal for 40 the first Friday of every month for many years. This is a wonderful opportunity for families or a group of friends to work together!

Summer Camp opportunities at Luther Park
Luther Park is located in northwestern Wisconsin, about two hours from the cities in Danbury, WI. Nestled on the spring-fed Lake 26 and surrounded by 186 acres of forest land and trails, you have all of these opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors at Luther Park!
Grandparent/Grandchild camp (June 30-July 3) or Family Camp (July 26-July 29):
Arrive by 4pm on the first day and leave at Noon on the last day. (It's also ok if you can't make the whole time.) Meals provided. Lodging options include cabins, log house, welcome center plus options for tents or campers too. Plenty of time for family bonding activities to canoe, kayak, paddleboard, play gaga ball or basketball, arts and crafts etc.... The days begin with Worship and end with Campfire.
Youth programs - various offerings from June 5 through July 29 including

- Half week cabin camp (Grades 1-4)
- Full week cabin or Treehouse camp (Grades 3-6)
- Day camp (Grades 1-6) held at local churches in the Twin Cities (see website for churches that have this option)

Founded in 2004, the Isles Ensemble is a group of musicians from the Twin Cities who present a series of Sunday afternoon concerts at LOTI. Chamber music is their passion, and their mission is to help build a vibrant chamber music community in the Twin Cities.
Listeners of all kinds are welcome, from chamber music connoisseurs to neophytes. Concerts are fun, inspiring, and personal experiences for each audience member. Repertoire is chosen from a wide range of styles, from classical to avant-garde, and includes gems from the standard repertoire as well as little-known works that merit further consideration. The players introduce each piece with a short talk about the music to provide some listening guidance as well as a performer's perspective. After each concert, audience members are invited to join the performers at an informal reception for a chance to mingle and discuss the music in more depth.

Flower Bombing
While walking the pilgrim trail of El Camino de Santiago in Spain, David Cook marveled at the 500 miles of sunflowers. They faced the sun and they were like humans. Their almost human faces inspired to create his own unique art form- "flower bombing." They came to life in his head , as he stayed up all night for four days in a row, painting flowers manically. That is the genesis of his work that will be installed for our Mother's Day

Working Speaker Series
Working is the theme of an ongoing speaker series in which people talk about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do.
The next session will be Sunday, May 12
th
and the guest speaker will be Bruce Carlson.
After two chance events in college redirected him from a career in fish biology to the study of regeneration, and human embryonic development.
Bruce embarked on a 40 year career as a professor at the University of Michigan Medical School. His research led to his living in five different countries and writing 15 books. Along the way, he married one of his medical students, Jean, who later spent 20 years working with him in the lab. In 1989, another chance encounter connected Bruce to the Fetzer Institute, an association that has continued in various capacities until he became interim executive vice-president last year. As of February, Bruce is delightfully unemployed.
Bruce's talk will take place after a brief coffee
break following the Sunday morning service.

We'll share snacks and beverages.

Exhibition in the Fellowship Hall
 Artist Todd Miller was born in Duluth, and after graduating from Control Data Institute in 1984, he moved to Minneapolis. From a beginning in the electronics field, he attained a Liberal Arts degree in French from the University of Minnesota. He eventually gravitated to photography.
His images, with bold colors and unconventional compositions, will be featured in the Fellowship Hall for the next 3 months.

Camp Amnicon
ENJOY A WEEKEND AT CAMP AMNICON ON THE SOUTH SHORE OF LAKE SUPERIOR
May 17 (evening) - 19 (after lunch), 2019
Camp Amnicon is a high adventure camp affiliated with the ELCA and located on the south shore of Lake Superior. During the summer small groups go out on various canoe and hiking trips with highly trained guides. Amnicon has work weekends during the year to get the camp ready for the different seasons. The winter retreat season is over and the summer camping season will soon start. In exchange for your volunteer labor, you have a bed to sleep in (bunk rooms) and delicious meals. No special talents are necessary and all ages are welcome. There is also time to explore the 700 acres of wilderness. Camp Amnicon depends on volunteer labor to make it possible for at-risk youth to attend camp, as well as to serve church groups from all over the country. You don't need to get 9 friends together before you come with us on the adventure of a lifetime, but you will have at least that many friends when your adventure is done. Included in your trip is food, gear, campsite reservations, daily devotions and Bible study, professional wilderness guides, and a whole lot of adventure.

An intermediate paddling route for ages 11 and up, the Flambeau River Ramble is great for those who would like to try their first forays into white-water canoeing. Women's Glamping, August 22-25
For adult women only. Camp Amnicon is offering for the first time ever a more comfortable and sophisticated camping experience. We'll still sleep in tents, but they'll be huge canvass tents with real mattresses and bed frames. We'll still cook and eat outside, but with a style and quality rarely associated with the outdoors. We'll still hike, swim, and paddle, but only as far as we'd like to, because camping can be glamorous after all.
