Take Action on Coronavirus!

Countless reports coming in from the various rail properties across the continent are revealing that the rail carriers are not taking the Coronavirus pandemic seriously. They are gambling with our lives and the safety and security of the nation's rail infrastructure. It is time for rank & file railroad workers to act!

What You Can Do ...

1 - Circulate the Resolution on Coronavirus at work. Make copies and pass it out to co-workers and post on bulletin boards. Have your local union adopt a similar document. Push to make those 6 demands a reality in your terminal.

2 - Forward the RWU Press Release to local media outlets.

3 - Demand that your employer follow basic safety and health protocols to ensure a safe working environment. Check out the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention Guidelines .

4 - We are all in this together. Attend your local union meeting and develop and a unified plan of action. Is your union meeting cancelled due to "social distancing"? Have the local conduct the meeting via teleconference. Here are Seven Options to Choose from to Set up Free Conference Calls.

5 - Communication is key. Make use of the local union webpage, Facebook Page and/or list serve to disseminate information and share ideas among your fellow workers. Don't have these? Help your local union to set them up! Listing of the Best Free Website Builders for 2020 .

6 - Employ the local union's Safety Committee to hold the carrier's feet to the fire. The minutes from these meetings are official and legal documents. Demand answers and action from the employer! Don't let the carrier off the hook later when they try to say, "we didn't know."

7 - Railroad workers on the ground see and hear what is or is not happening in your terminal, aboard your locomotives, and across your Division. Everyone of us has a role to play in ensuring that the carriers follow through and implement the necessary protocols. Remember, by law, the employer is to provide us with a safe workplace!

8 - Most railroads have a so-called "Safety Hotline." When the carrier is not providing a sanitary workplace, refrains from temperature testing, or fails to provide the necessary tools and materials for you to do your job safely, sound off! Call, email, write or otherwise post your issues to the company Safety Hotline whenever you witness unsafe/unhealthy conditions.

9 - RWU hopes to have a site where rail workers from across North America from all carriers, crafts and unions can post their first-hand observations and experiences on railroad property. Look for it soon. And please POST YOURS!

10 - Join Railroad Workers United and get involved in the fight for a safe workplace. What we cannot do alone we can do together!
