Today's COVID-19 Update: March 20, 2020
A special message from Dr. Channa Cook-Harvey, our Director of Social-Emotional Learning:

Before we dive into today's COVID-19 update,  let's pause for a mindful moment. It's been a stressful week for everyone in the Folsom Cordova community, so we thought we'd offer you something simple you can do, right now - with your loved ones, or alone - to help you de-stress heading into the weekend:

Gratitude: In the midst of widespread uncertainty, and as we embark on a whole new way of engaging with each other (at home, at work, and virtually) there is no better time to sift through all of the unknowns to identify what we can be thankful for.  Gratitude is more than just saying "thank you" to someone who has been helpful; in fact, researchers consider it a "life orientation," where feelings of gratitude stem from noticing and appreciating the positive things in life (Wood et al., 2010). This mindset of gratitude can be especially helpful during periods of stress and transition (very much like what we're experiencing now!).
People who regularly practice gratitude experience more:
  • positive emotions,
  • feel more alive,
  • sleep better,
  • express more compassion and kindness, and
  • even have stronger immune systems.
Your District leadership team  - appropriately socially distanced, of course - is trying this particular mindful practice today and would love to have you join us! Find a scrap of paper, or use a note taking app on your smartphone, and make a list of things you are grateful for.

Additional COVID-19 updates: March 20, 2020
On Thursday, Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a stay-at-home order for all Californians until further notice, except as needed to maintain essential services such as education.

Will the stay-at-home order impact when school reopens?
  • The Governor's order is in effect "until further notice." While the District has not changed its scheduled re-open date of April 14, we are preparing for the possibility to be closed for the rest of the year. We will communicate updates to families as details are available.
  • Although the District is transitioning to distance learning during this closure, we are still recognizing our Spring Break from April 6-13.
Will the stay-at-home order impact meal distribution?
No; we will resume weekday "grab and go" meal distribution on Monday at our seven designated locations.

Good news for AP students:
Today, the College Board announced new measures to support students and educators affected by COVID-19 school closures. These include access to online learning resources, as well as the development of new at-home testing options. Click here for more information.

What progress has the District made on implementing distance learning?
In the last three days school and District leaders have been working with staff and families to assess technology needs for working and learning at home, and allowing students and staff to gather materials they will need in the coming weeks. Additionally, the District has been finalizing the online platform for which many distance learning materials will be housed.
The District intends to formally launch its distance learning instruction beginning March 30.  For the full tentative timeline, click here for yesterday's COVID-19 update.

Where can families access free internet if needed?
Xfinity WiFi Free for Everyone: Xfinity WiFi hotspots across the country will be available to anyone who needs them for free - including non-Xfinity Internet subscribers. For a map of Xfinity WiFi hotspots, visit www.xfinity.com/wifi. Once at a hotspot, consumers should select the "xfinitywifi" network name in the list of available hotspots and then launch a browser.

Will the District continue daily updates?
The District will post its next update on Monday, March 23. As we move closer to launching our distance learning plan, expect to hear more from your schools' principals and teachers. In the meantime, FCUSD will continue to provide regular updates in all available communication channels including our website (www.fcusd.org/coronavirus), our social media channels (FacebookInstagramTwitter), and direct text, email, and phone calls.
