Why You Should (Always) Dress for Success
It may help you generate more income...

"I used to believe the way you dress didn't have an impact on business," says Neil Patel, influential author and web entrepreneur. "I was wrong." In other words, if you feel more inclined to wear T-shirts into a professional setting these days as opposed to a nice shirt, then you might want to reconsider. "If you want to succeed," Patel adds, "the sad reality is, people will judge you for things that you may not like."

Buying or Selling A Business?
The Chamber Can Help!

The Chamber takes its role as a supporter of the local business community very seriously and part of that role is to assist in keeping existing businesses open. Often, that means finding a new owner when the existing one is nearing retirement or helping someone who wants to be in business but doesn't know what kind of business would be a good fit for them.

The Chamber and the Ohio Small Business Development Center at Kent State can provide the connection between those who are considering selling their business and those who are interested in becoming business owners. Services are completely confidential with both parties signing a non-disclosure agreement as an important first step. Professional counselors can provide guidance in financing options, legal issues, business formation, property acquisition and more. If you would like to list your existing business for sale or you are exploring business ownership, please contact Tricia Maple-Damewood at 740.282.6226 or tmaple@jeffersoncountychamber.com.

Up-to-Date Information from the Ohio and United States Chamber of Commerce
Business Leaders Remain Optimistic, with a Cautious Eye Toward the Future

The Ohio Chamber of Commerce Research Foundation released the findings of its quarterly business leader’s survey today. The 2nd Quarter findings of 2019 reveal the following:

  • The statewide Prosperity Pulse measured at 119.6, a small decline from the previous mark of 121.8.
  • Increases in planned capital investments and current job openings, paired with decreases in anticipated profits and overall economic outlook resulted in a minor drop.
  • Unease regarding ongoing trade conflicts with China and the potential for further interest rate changes by the Federal Reserve led to concerns about stability.
  • Optimism remains strong overall at 90%, but falls to an 18-month low.
  • Healthcare costs remain the top concern of Ohio business leaders, while federal regulations and economic uncertainty enter the top five for the first time this year.

Following a strong boost in confidence among Ohio business leaders in the 1st Quarter, the 2nd Quarter saw a slight reduction in the Prosperity Pulse index. We surveyed nearly 400 business leaders across Ohio, with 88% representing firms of under 100 employees, and the results indicate emerging worries among businesses about future economic stability.

Donohue in The Washington Post: Restore Certainty, Rebuild Confidence

In a column published [last] Thursday by The Washington Post , U.S. Chamber of Commerce CEO Tom Donohue called on our nation’s leaders on both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue to take immediate steps to restore certainty, boost business confidence and keep America’s economy growing.

“Amid all the talk of a possible recession, it’s important for everyone to remember this: Economic expansions do not die of natural causes,” Donohue writes. “They often die because of missteps and policy mistakes. And the biggest mistake our leaders could make right now — putting our economy at greater risk of a downturn — is to stoke further uncertainty.”

He adds: “We’re calling on our leaders to eliminate the uncertainty, rebuild business confidence and keep this economy working for all Americans.”

Donohue notes that “business confidence is faltering” in recent months and outlined steps the White House and Congress can take to turn the tide and prevent further uncertainty.

“For the Trump administration’s part, the escalation of trade tensions with China must come to an end,” Donohue writes...

Leap: How to Thrive in a World Where Everything Can Be Copied
by Howard Yu

How can companies achieve long-term success? Through learning to leap: building a system of reinvention into their organization that will stave off competition and keep them at the top of their industry. Outlasting competition is difficult. Doing so over decades or a century is nearly impossible. Yet, some pioneering companies have managed to endure and even prosper over the course of centuries. How is that possible? And what can we learn from those companies as we compete in a more globalized arena where everything can be copied? In Leap , Howard Yu illustrates how competitive advantage can be achieved, even in a world where labor, information, and money move easily, cheaply, and almost instantaneously. He identifies the five fundamental principles that allow companies to make a leap and stay successful in the face of competition.

Today in History

- September 6, 1915 -

From History.com: On September 6th, 1915, a prototype tank nicknamed Little Willie rolls off the assembly line in England. Little Willie was far from an overnight success. It weighed 14 tons, got stuck in trenches and crawled over rough terrain at only two miles per hour. However, improvements were made to the original prototype and tanks eventually transformed military battlefields.

The British developed the tank in response to the trench warfare of World War I. In 1914, a British army colonel named Ernest Swinton and William Hankey, secretary of the Committee for Imperial Defence, championed the idea of an armored vehicle with conveyor-belt-like tracks over its wheels that could break through enemy lines and traverse difficult territory. The men appealed to British navy minister Winston Churchill, who believed in the concept of a “land boat” and organized a Landships Committee to begin developing a prototype. To keep the project secret from enemies, production workers were reportedly told the vehicles they were building would be used to carry water on the battlefield (alternate theories suggest the shells of the new vehicles resembled water tanks). Either way, the new vehicles were shipped in crates labeled “tank” and the name stuck.

The first tank prototype, Little Willie, was unveiled in September 1915. Following its underwhelming performance–it was slow, became overheated and couldn’t cross trenches–a second prototype, known as “Big Willie,” was produced. By 1916, this armored vehicle was deemed ready for battle and made its debut at the First Battle of the Somme near Courcelette, France, on September 15 of that year. Known as the Mark I, this first batch of tanks was hot, noisy and unwieldy and suffered mechanical malfunctions on the battlefield; nevertheless, people realized the tank’s potential. Further design improvements were made and at the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917, 400 Mark IV’s proved much more successful than the Mark I, capturing 8,000 enemy troops and 100 guns.

Tanks rapidly became an important military weapon. During World War II, they played a prominent role across numerous battlefields.
