Aliyah:
I am currently in my second semester of my freshman year at Grand Valley State University, and everything is going well so far. I’ve joined some clubs, made great friends, and have been enjoying the wide spectrum of my class schedule. I feel as though I have finally found my routine for the year!
I’m still on track for Pre-Veterinary Medicine, and I’ve even been able to fit in some shadowing hours over the semester at a local clinic as well as discuss the future of my vet schooling and career with a veterinarian. I just came back from a Public Health Brigade in Honduras which was quite exciting and eye-opening.

Overcoming Grief
You helped a family overcome multiple issues to see a brighter future.

When 16-year-old Brandon lost one close friend to suicide and two family members to drug overdoses, he became a different person.
“He was a happy-go lucky kid on the honor role at school,” said his mother, Carlee. “Then he turned to drugs and alcohol, and became angrier. I was aware of it and tried everything I could to stop it.”
After a heated argument at their house, Brandon was charged and put on probation. The court recommended Highfields Multisystemic Therapy to help Carlee and Brandon overcome their issues.
Carlee began working with Highfields’ therapist, Tom Kennedy. They met three times a week and talked about the multiple challenges surrounding Brandon, including tense family relationships, drug issues, and how to deal with grief.

Foundation and Grant Support
We are grateful to receive funding from the
Jackson Community Foundation's Youth Advisory Committee
for “Color Me Resilient,” a week-long art therapy program for youth involved in Highfields’ counseling programs. The program will focus on creation of individual art work in addition to a public art piece that will be displayed at the Bright Walls Mural festival held in Jackson in September.
