Child Development Center News

Two hundred and eleven children are now enrolled at the Child Development Center (CDC) and we are proud of the team of professionals who are working to ensure their success. The children benefit from the innovative programs offered at the CDC which are being recognized throughout Virginia. The CDC has been selected as one of 10 centers in Fairfax County to participate in the Communities of Learning program due to its use of inclusive practices. The Virginia Early Childhood Foundation hosted 20 staff members at an apprenticeship roundtable to learn about and envision the future of early childhood apprenticeships in Virginia.
Children at the center are benefiting from its partnership with
Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts. Professional Teaching Artists are paired with early childhood educators who then work with teachers in their classrooms-sharing arts-integrated learning strategies, developing lesson plans, and interacting with children.
The Wolf Trap Residency program is implemented in 11 of our 14 classrooms.

Rebuilding Together 
2019 will mark the 30th year that ACCA has participated in Rebuilding Together (formerly Christmas in April). ACCA volunteers are preparing for the big day, April 27. Over the past twenty-nine years, we have repaired and rehabilitated the homes of 123 low-income homeowners and non-profit housing facilities providing over 38,000 volunteer hours and insuring that low-income seniors, persons with disabilities and families with children have a safe, accessible and healthy environment in which to live.
Even if your church is not one of the co-sponsors, you can still participate. Please consider volunteering or making a donation to ACCA to help us cover the cost of materials and other expenses. Checks should be made out to ACCA, noting Rebuilding Together on the Memo line.

The 2019 National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 2. Pastor Carl Johnson and the Prayer Ministry of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church (MPBC) of Alexandria, VA extends a special invitation to the Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA) to participate in praying with us at MPBC on Thursday, May 2 at the 7 p.m. service at the church located at 6477 Lincolnia Road.

Homework Club News
ACCA is continuing its Good Neighbor project with Lutheran Social Services and we are enjoying providing homework help to children from refugee families in the area. This project began in January and is growing with 6 families including 19 children.
The families arrive at Peace Lutheran Church on Saturday mornings and volunteers are in place to help with homework for the children while their parents work on their English skills.
Our biggest need continues to be volunteer drivers to pick-up and take families home. Even one-way transportation would be very helpful. Most of the families live near Peace Lutheran Church.
We continue to meet on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. We will not meet on Memorial Day weekend.
We are looking forward to enhancing our ESL program with a training session in September.

Due to the retirement of several key volunteers, ACCA leadership has been working on restructuring its Food and Nutrition program. Donations to the program are collected through the ACCA churches and other local organizations who provide nonperishable food for the food pantry. The ACCA Food and Nutrition program provides groceries to needy families who are referred through Fairfax County's Health and Human Services office. Volunteers are needed to fulfill positions such as grocery buyer, pantry stocker, pantry cleaner, grant reporter, and scheduler. Time commitments begin with just a couple of hours on a weekend. Ministry Updates
Family Emergency Assistance served 45 households in March, providing $27,709 in emergency aid for rent, utilities, medical and other assistance. Many families had employment, immigration, and health issues.
The
Food Pantry made 59 deliveries in March, assisting 166 individuals. Forty-five families at Bailey's Elementary received a 4 day supply of food to help them over the weekends when their school breakfasts and lunches are not available.
The Falls Church/Annandale Lions Club have once again supplied the pantry with oranges, grapefruit and apples which our families enjoy. Giant grocery donated over 250 pounds of food and our churches continue with generous donations.
The pantry is in need of volunteers to act as food captains, delivery drivers, and a chairperson. Contact Jean Rackowski at

The
Furniture Ministry made deliveries to 15 households and completed 12 pickups along with 23 warehouse donations in March. Thirty-seven volunteers helped these families which included several with single mothers, children, senior citizens, and people with special needs.
Annandale Meals on Wheels
During March, we delivered a total of 1224 meals to 25 clients over 4 routes.
This program provides meals to homebound elderly, disabled, or convalescing individuals unable to cook for themselves.
Transportation
In March, the joint Shepherd's Center-ACCA transportation program provided 37 two-way rides and one one-way ride. It provided rides to 3 former ACCA clients.
