Video Greetings From Coach
Coach Biller's Freestyle Lesson #3
The Exit...
Hi everyone! I hope you and your swimmers are benefiting from my weekly "out of the water" lessons! So far, we've learned about catching the water ( lesson #1 ) and the pull ( lesson #2 ). So, what's next? A strong finish!

The "Exit" of the freestyle stroke is definitely the most overlooked part of the stroke. Too many swimmers pull their arms out of the water way too soon!
Watch how Nathan Adrian finishes his pull
You always see swimmers taking their stroke out of the water around their waist. This shortens their stroke and causes them to lose power.

I like to show swimmers where to finish their stroke by having them stand tall with their arms at their sides. Then, I will have them scratch the side of their leg where their thumb is. This is the spot where the stroke should finish--well past the suit line.
  • To Do #1: During this time at home, have your swimmer practice this and really think about where they should be finishing their stroke.

By finishing each stroke properly, your swimmer will gain more distance per stroke and more power, leading to faster times.

  • To Do #2: Watch Nathan Adrian in the above video finish each stroke properly, well past the suit line. Nathan never "turns his brain off" when he swims. He is always thinking about getting the most out of each part of each stroke.

Practice does not make perfect, only perfect practice makes perfect.
If you keep repeating a bad stroke, then you are building that bad stroke. If you focus and make each part of the stroke perfect, then you will build an amazing stroke that will pay off in your races.

Have a great week, everyone!
