Purple Line Construction Updates
On August 21, 2019, crews closed the eastbound lanes of Campus Drive long-term between the Paint Branch Trail and River Road. Traffic will shift to the westbound lanes, with one lane open in each direction.

Beginning on or about September 1, 2019, the College Park Metro Bus Loop will be closed long-term for Purple Line construction. The bus stops within the bus loop will be relocated to temporary bus shelters along River Road. Please note that buses will queue up at the temporary bus stops from 5 a.m. from 11 p.m.

A WEEK IN REVIEW
Office of the City Manager
Councilmember Mitchell, City Manager Somers, and Code Enforcement Officer Daves attended the Maryland Municipal League (MML) Legislative Committee meeting. City Council will discuss MML legislative priorities during the September 10th Council meeting.

Mayor Wojahn, City Manager Somers, and Finance Director Fields along with the City’s financial advisory, continued preparing for upcoming meetings with two credit rating agencies, Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s (S&P). The City, with the help of its financial advisory, will present financial and economic information and statistics in order to obtain a favorable credit rating which will allow the City to sell bonds for the City Hall and Duvall Field projects at a favorable interest rate.

City Manager Somers, Assistant City Manager Gardiner, and Planning Director Schum participated in a City Hall Project team meeting to discuss and review updates to the project including options for value engineer in order to reduce costs. 

City staff continue to plan for the City Hall move in October. Phase 1 of 3 began this week by moving files and IT equipment to the Davis Hall building at Public Works. 
Department of Planning, Community & Economic Development
In July 2019, the Prince George’s County Council approved legislation to initiate the Countywide Map Amendment process that will rezone all county properties following adoption of the new Zoning Ordinance and Subdivision Regulations in October 2018. In the next few weeks, every county resident and property owner will be mailed a written notification of this process and how to participate. An interactive digital map will also be made available to help the public see the proposed zoning changes and regional education sessions will be held by M-NCPPC staff. At least one public hearing will be held in the spring of 2020 and final District Council approval is expected late fall 2020. For more information go to zoningpgc.pgplanning.com .

VeoRide mobility sharing had a soft launch on August 28 with about 160 vehicles in operation (only half of the full fleet). There have been over 2,000 rides taken with scooters being the most popular followed by electric bikes then pedal bikes. Over the coming weeks, more vehicles will be put into operation and more parking areas will be provided.  
Department of Public Works
The Department prepared for the residual effects of Hurricane Dorian by cleaning and checking storm drains in the City, and prepping tools and supplies that may be needed

A new asphalt shingle roof was installed on Davis Hall last week

The Department installed a Reed Whittemore sign (an Anacostia Trail Heritage Sign) at Albion & Rhode Island Ave

If you would like to start diverting your food scraps, we have 5-gallon food scrap buckets available during regular business hours. The buckets are useful to transport collected food scraps to the drop off location.

We continue to receive calls about trees maintenance on private property. Please note, the property owner is responsible for any tree issues on their property.

  • Tree Planting in the Right-of-Way: If you would like a tree planted in the right-of way in front of your home, please contact Brenda Alexander to discuss options at 240-487-3595 or balexander@collegeparkmd.gov.
  • Tree Canopy Enhancement Program (TCEP) on Private Property: The City has a program to reimburse the cost (up to $150.00) of approved trees on private property. Click here for more information and application.

Weekly Highlights of Contract Police Activity
August 16 - 22, 2019
8/24 Contract officer stopped a student for possession on an open alcoholic beverage at Rhode Island Avenue and College Avenue. Criminal citation was issued.

8/25 Contract officer stopped a student for possession on an open alcoholic beverage at Baltimore Avenue and College Avenue. The student was uncooperative as a student referral was submitted.

8/26 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Speed Enforcement) in the 9000 block of Baltimore Avenue. 84 citations were issued as the officer was operating the portable “Mobile Camera.”

8/26 Contract officer responded to a call for service for a report of shots fired near Keirnan Road and 47th Avenue. No illicit activity was located.

8/27 Contract officer responded to a call for service for loud music at the car wash located in the 8600 block of Baltimore Avenue. No loud music was heard.

8/27 Contract officer responded to a call for service for a loud party in the 7500 block of Columbia Avenue. The officer heard loud music and yelling from the residence as observed 50 persons exit as the party was terminated.  We responded to a loud party complaint several days prior. Student referral was submitted.  

8/28 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Stop Sign Enforcement) at Saint Andrews Place and Duke Street.  1 citation and 5 warnings were issued.

8/28 Contract officer conducted a traffic assignment (Speed Enforcement) in the 9000 block of Baltimore Avenue. 77 citations were issued as the officer was operating the portable “Mobile Camera.”

8/29 Contract officer stopped a student for possession on an open alcoholic beverage at Norwich Avenue and Girard Avenue. Student referral was submitted.

8/29 Contract officer responded to a call for service for a loud party in the 7300 block of Rhode Island Avenue. The officer heard a loud party from the residence as observed 100 persons exit as the party was terminated. Many party goers were intoxicated and attempted to leave the residence with open containers. Officers were at this location 2 days prior for a loud party.   Student referral was submitted.  

8/29 Assisted public works with an abatement incident.
