Juniors To Take SAT Test During School Day on April 9
|
|
On April 9th all Juniors will take part in the SAT as our state testing requirement. New this year will be that all students will be taking the Digital SAT on their Chromebooks. Students will arrive to school at the regular time and will be assigned to a testing room. Students will be in their testing rooms until about 12:30. In order to help them be successful, all students will have time to practice on the digital testing platform on April 4th. They will also receive an SAT Student Guide which offers test taking tips and practice questions. Students will be able to send their scores for free to up to 4 colleges or the NCAA. In order to make sure that all chromebooks are charged and ready for testing, Juniors will not be allowed to take their chromebooks home on April 8th (teachers are aware of this and assignment due dates have been modified to accommodate this).
You can help your child to be successful on this test by making sure they get a good night's sleep the night before and having them eat a healthy breakfast on the morning of the exam. Students should bring a water bottle and a snack for the exam. Please know that in order to ensure the security of the test, students will not have access to their phones during the entire length of the test. Once the test is over, students will go to the lunchroom and then an activity in the afternoon. If you would like to dismiss your child after the test, you must send in a note to the main office and arrange for transportation. Students will be dismissed for the day at the end of the regular school day.
If you have any questions about the testing day or the SAT, please contact Heidi Leavitt, Director of Counseling at hleavitt@sau17.net.

Sanborn Teacher Nominated For State’s Top Teacher Award
|
|
This week, the New Hampshire Department of Education announced that Kerrie Alley-Violette, a business technology teacher at Sanborn Regional High School, has been nominated for the 2020 New Hampshire Teacher of the Year Award. Mrs. Alley joins 37 other educators from around the state who have also received a nomination for the award.
Mrs. Alley is the school’s Career Pathways Coordinator. In this role, she organizes hundreds of work-based opportunities for students from job shadows and career speakers series to industry tours and credit-bearing internships and extended learning opportunities. Each year, hundreds of students take advantage of programming developed by Mrs. Alley.
Sanborn’s Career Pathways program, under Mrs. Alley’s direction, is considered a model program in the state as a way for all students to engage in authentic, real-world learning opportunities. Mrs. Alley coordinates efforts with hundreds of community-based partners, businesses, and organizations in the greater Kingston, Newton, and Fremont area.
Mrs. Alley is considered a leader in the state’s efforts to bolster extended learning opportunities. On September 25, 2018, the New Hampshire Work-Based Learning Group honored her with the 2018 Teacher/Faculty Champion Award for her efforts. Mrs. Alley has been asked to present her work at several statewide meetings and conferences.
Principal Brian M. Stack had this to say about Mrs. Alley’s nomination: “The New Hampshire Teacher of the Year Award is a prestigious honor given to one NH educator who can serve to inspire and motivate all NH educators to maintain their focus on providing quality, rigorous, and relevant instruction to students. We are honored to have Mrs. Alley as a valued member of our Sanborn family and community.”
Mrs. Alley will share her work with other award nominees at a celebration event in Concord on April 1. From there, an award selection committee will conduct site visits to nominees’ classrooms and invite finalists to deliver an oral presentation on their qualifications. The final selection and announcement of the 2020 New Hampshire of the Year recipient will be made in September of 2019.

Sanborn Receives Grant To Offer NECC Scholarships For 2019-2020 Year
|
|
Earlier this year, Sanborn Regional High School announced a new partnership with Northern Essex Community College that allows students in the district to take NECC classes at the Haverhill campus for a reduced cost of $375 per class. Sanborn plans to run a bus daily to and from NECC so students can take classes during the school day.
Today, SRHS is excited to announce that it has been awarded a $20,250.00 grant to be used to provide scholarships for the 2019-2020 school year to offset the NECC tuition for families. Students interested in being considered for a scholarship must notify School Counseling Director Heidi Leavitt by Friday, March 29th by email at
hleavitt@sau17.net. Students are required to take the Accuplacer exam at NECC and receive a qualifying score in order to be accepted into the program before May 1, 2019. After that date, the school will send information to accepted Sanborn students on how they can apply for a scholarship.

Senior Spotlight: Olivia Boucher
|
|
Note: Each week, we will feature a few seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.

Olivia Boucher, of the beloved Boucher twins, is a wonderful and goal- oriented young lady. As one of her eighth grade teachers, I’ve been fortunate to re-connect with her as a senior. Olivia’s quiet confidence shines through with everything she does, and everyone she meets. Olivia has embraced many aspects of what Sanborn has to offer, she is currently serving as treasurer in the National Honors Society, she has been a “key” 4 year member of Key Club, and is a DECA member in her Marketing Technologies class in SST. Olivia is just as involved academically; she has received High Honors for her Freshman year, Honors with Distinction for Sophomore year and the President's Award of Excellence in her Junior year. Currently she is a receptionist at Amelia's Salon in Merrimac. After Sanborn, Olivia will directly implement many of her experiences as she begins achieving her many goals. She is planning on attending a cosmetology school to get her cosmetology license. From there, her goal is to own her own salon, and plans to feature her hairstyles during New York Fashion Week, on the Red Carpet, and in TV shows and movies for Hollywood! If that isn’t enough, in the near future, Olivia wants to travel to experience various cultures around the world. We all wish the best of luck to Olivia as she heads out on her own, but by her focus, we know she’ll do well!

Senior Spotlight: Owen Snively
|
|
Note: Each week, we will feature a few seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.
This article was written by Teacher Josh White
|
|
Owen Snively is one of the most recognizable students at Sanborn; it may be because of his 6’5 stature, or it’s because of his contagious smile, either way if you have been to Sanborn, he is hard to miss. I have had the privilege of having Owen, not only in class, but as an athlete on the football field as well. In the classroom Owen is a leader who is not afraid to take the lead in any group assignments. On the football field, Owen is a force to be reckoned with; his size and work ethic make Owen a dominant athlete.
Owen has been the member of many different clubs and teams throughout his years at Sanborn, including, Football, Winter Track, Spring Track, Baseball and Key Club. From these club and teams, Owen has some amazing accolades, including; First team All-State in football and currently holds the school record in shot put (Both indoor and outdoor) with an amazing 48’9” and 47’6”.
Science teacher Heather Wheeler had this to say about Owen, “Owen is an incredibly optimistic and hard working kid. He makes other students happy with his positive attitude”
Owen is currently enrolled in an internship with the Salisbury police department, as he plans to pursue a career in law enforcement. Next year Owen plans to attend Bridgeton Academy where he will continue with football. Owen will be missed here at Sanborn, but we know he will do great things in his future.

Senior Spotlight: Leah Bettencourt
|
|
Note: Each week, we will feature a few seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.
This article was written by teacher Aaron Cass
|
|
Leah Bettencourt is a good kid. When she smiles, you feel it. When you’re having a tough day, she’s got just the right amount of snark and sass to make you laugh.
I haven’t had her in class since sophomore year, so here’s the update. The Scion is rolling strong. She’s still rockin’ Dunks, working way more than any high schooler should at 35 hrs/week. But hey, having money isn’t such a bad thing, right. Her coworkers are also her friends, so that’s not so bad. She might even be heading for shift manager, but we’ll see.
She just got a stylie tattoo of her three dogs. Her newest pup is a French bulldog named Chuck. She lost two of her other dogs recently, which was sad, but Chuck makes her happy now. He teethes but he’s sweet and adorable, so all’s forgiven.
Though she isn't in an art class now, she's a terrific artist. Her art teacher, Ms. Vitolo, said she made an awesome Pop Art style portrait of her pug, which was selected for display at the Exeter Town Hall Gallery.
When she graduates, Leah has a couple of things in mind for what’s next. One option would be to cut down on hours at Dunks and do an apprenticeship with her favorite tattoo artist in Raymond. Though I’m worried she’ll come back with ink from head to toe, she’s stoked that her work during her apprenticeship will be repaid in free tattoo time. I asked her if she was considering doing piercings too, but she wasn’t so into poking holes in people.
Her other plan for after Sanborn, which sounds fun, is to travel. She’d probably start low key and make a trip down to the Carolinas where she has some connections. From there, who knows – Paris, Hong Kong, the moon? The sky’s the limit, Leah! Don’t forget to come back and visit :)

Senior Spotlight: Corey DiBurro
|
|
Note: Each week, we will feature a few seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.
This article was written by Teacher Anne Black

The Sanborn community has been lucky to have Corey DiBurro as a student here at SRHS. I have had the pleasure to have Corey as a student in Statistics. Not only does Corey understand the material, but he also often engages his peers by discussing and debating topics that have been the source of our data. He is the type of student that both students and teachers want to be around.
Corey’s teachers had a lot of impressive things to say about him. Ms. Wheeler, one of Corey’s science teachers, shared, “Corey is a bright young man. He has a kind heart and a quirky sense of humor.” Ms. Richardson, another one of Corey’s science teachers, said, “Corey is a strong critical thinker and gets restless while in school because he would rather be doing something than talking about doing it.” Mr. Kelly, Corey’s shop teacher, shared, “Corey DiBurro is the answer man in the Sanborn Auto Shop. When students have an issue with their car, a common question is ‘Can Corey look at it?’ And we are happy to say yes. Dependable, talented and responsible, Corey DiBurro has a bright future in the trades if he chooses to pursue it. And I hope he does.”
Corey’s advisor and counselor also had impressive comments to share! Ms. Farrar, Corey’s counselor, said, “Corey is a down to earth young man, who excels and loves to work with his hands. Taking Building Construction last year at SST and now there taking automotive. He's has a good head on his shoulders and no doubt will be successful in what ever he does after high school.” Ms. Graham, Corey’s advisor said, “Corey is one of my favorite people--I've known him since my first year at Sanborn and I've had him for two years in Advisory. He has a tough exterior, but he is a great person to get to know. He may not want everyone to know he is talented and smart, but he is! I know he will do great things.”
When Corey graduates from Sanborn, he will be taking a year off before joining the military. We know that he will succeed in any direction that his path takes him. We wish you the best of luck, Corey!

Senior Spotlight: Ashlee Wright
|
|
Note: Each week, we will feature a few seniors with a spotlight article, written by a staff member.

It has been my pleasure getting to know Ashlee in Chemistry this year and I will miss her after she graduates. She would tell you that she is not a morning person and an 80 minute chemistry class every other day first thing in the morning did not thrill her. However, Ashlee has a can-do attitude and a great sense of humor which appears to sustain her. I have seen Ashlee persevere, setting success as her goal and taking the initiative necessary to focus, work, and achieve her goal. I think this is the essence of grit, a quality which Ashlee demonstrates. I was not surprised to hear these things from other teachers about Ashlee:
Michelle Wheeler: “Ashlee has a quiet and dry sense of humor that I admire and love to see expressed during class and in her work. She also works to unpack assignments and really understand the topic at hand. I will miss her next year!”
Aaron Cass: “My fondest, quirkiest memory of Ashlee is when she challenged me to a push-up competition. It was brutal and I eeked out a win by the end, but I still respect her for trying and appreciate her no-holds-barred sense of humor.” (Mr.s Cass’ win is unconfirmed by Ashlee.)
Jack Kelly: “Ashlee lights up the room with her smile. Her positive attitude and ability to overcome setbacks will help her in life. And how many of us are called to administer CPR , while in a room full of adults, who were unsure how to react? Ashlee handled it perfectly, and was recognized with a citation from the Exeter Fire Dept for her quick response. Oh, and she did all this as a sophomore!”
Well, Ashlee’s sophomore year has come and gone, and soon so will have all of her high school years, but her character: her humor, her attitude, her perseverance, her willingness to react, her unflappable determination to achieve goals- these things will go with her when she graduates. We are very proud to hold Ashlee as one of Sanborn’s own!
Congratulations Ashlee and Class of 2019!

Travel With Sanborn To Walt Disney World in April of 2020
|
|
On Thursday, April 11th at 5:30 PM, there will be an information session for students interested in the trip to Walt Disney World in April 2020. Although the trip is over a year away, there is extensive planning and reservations that must be done by June.
The trip will include a learning component involving the evolution of technology (a 3-hour technology workshop experience), some STEM learning elements, and hopefully an opportunity to dine with a Disney engineer (Imagineer) where students can ask questions about anything STEM or engineering-related at Disney. There will also be plenty of time for fun in the parks! The trip will cost $1,500 and include everything with the exception of a couple of meals on travel days.
In order to ensure an adequate number of students for this trip to take place, the information session is mandatory. For anyone wanting to participate in the trip but unable to attend the meeting, parents or legal guardians should email Jim Enright at jenright@sau17.net by April 10th.

Sanborn Drama Club To Compete in State Theatre Festival
|
|
For the second year in a row the Sanborn Regional Theatre Troupe has been named as one of the best in the state and has advanced to the New Hampshire Educational Theatre Guild’s State Theatre Festival. The troupe will present their production of Douglas Craven’s Lockdown on April 6th at Kingswood Regional High School in Wolfeboro.
The group advanced to the State Festival after their performance on March 6th at The Pinkerton Regional Festival. Other schools advancing from this region include Coe-Brown Academy and Pinkerton Academy. According to the NHETG website, this “signature event annually brings together high school theatre programs from around the state. After each performance, the festival provides structured, constructive feedback both from the fellow student audience members as well as theatre professionals. At the end of the festival, awards are presented to students and groups for outstanding performances and technical elements.” It is the aim of the NHETG to foster growth through sharing events such as these festivals.
Directed by Sanborn alum Bridgette Doucette Howell, this one act play tells the story of a classroom of students in an “official lockdown” unsure if the lockdown is a drill or an actual emergency. “For festival this year the Troupe’s officers picked this show from a selection and as a team they all worked VERY hard to accomplish such a fantastic show. The judges praised the students for their ensemble teamwork. I am very proud of them!”
In addition to the Sanborn Theatre Troupe being awarded Best Production and qualifying for the State Festival, Junior Will Lewis was singled out with an award for Outstanding Acting Performance for his portrayal of “Tyler” in the production.
The cast and crew of the production of Lockdown includes: Adam O’Rourke, Emma Bowen, Sophia Szaniawski, Hope Kimball, Luke Larkham, Kevin O’Rourke, Olivia Bradley, Ava Tavares, Bridget Abney, Emily Abney, Alexander George, Shaylee Crawford, Robert Crawford, Casey Sheehan, Makayla Normandie, Diana Gibson, John Putnam, Adam Putnam, Jenna Gluck, Will Lewis, Tim Morgan, Laura Juliano, Maddie D’Antonio, Sarah Munroe, and Owen Tebo.

A Message From Principal Brian M. Stack
|
|
Dear Students in the Class of 2019:
It is hard to believe your time at Sanborn is almost over! This is an exciting time of year with many events and activities culminating with graduation set for
Friday, June 7, 2019. Congratulations to all seniors on your many accomplishments.
If weather permits, we will hold graduation on the library lawn. In the event of poor weather, we may have to hold graduation in the gymnasium. That same week, we will also hold a lottery to distribute any extra tickets that we can to families that need more than 8 tickets. Due to fire code regulations, we may not be able to accommodate all requests for additional tickets. You are encouraged to ask your classmates if they have extra tickets they could give you if you need more than eight.
The following is a list of senior activities for the remainder of the school year. Seniors who are on the “probationary” graduation list are not permitted to participate in senior activities and should speak to their counselor to find out what they need to do to be removed from probation. Please note the mandatory activities and graduation practices on June 6 and 7. Please also remember that all students must have their $50 class dues ($20 senior dues) paid in order to participate in the graduation ceremonies.

PTO Clothing Donation Bins
|
When you drop your unwanted clothing off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students.
Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
