All Large Scale Events Cancelled in
Long Beach Through April 2020
Dear Neighbor,

In a proactive effort to minimize COVID-19 exposure, the City of Long Beach will expand on the guidance issued by Governor Gavin Newsom with regard to the management and subsequent cancellation and/or postponement of events with an estimated attendance of 250 or more people. Today, Long Beach Health Officer, Dr. Anissa Davis, signed a declaration that prohibits all large-scale events in the city. This declaration is effective immediately and will remain in effect through April 30, 2020, unless further action is taken by the Health Officer to lessen or expand the order.

This order applies to all social, spiritual, recreational and business activities including, but not limited to: community, civic, public, leisure, faith-based and sporting events; parades; concerts; festivals; conventions; fundraisers and similar activities.

The City looks forward to working with Grand Prix Association of Long Beach as well as other promoters to find solutions for holding their events at a later date as the situation warrants.

Additional guidance and direction from the State of California includes the cancellation or postponement of:
  • Concerts, conferences, sporting events (if attendees number greater than 250, or where attendees cannot maintain a six-foot distance).
  • Smaller gatherings of fewer than 250 people shall be canceled or postponed if attendees are unable to maintain a six-foot distance.
  • Gatherings of people at high risk for serious illness shall consist of no more than 10 people
    • This includes gatherings at retirement facilities, assisted living facilities, developmental homes and support groups for people with health conditions.
  • Any other event that brings people into a single room, indoor or outdoor space and applies to all nonessential gatherings, regardless of their sponsors.

This guidance and direction does NOT apply to:
  • Schools, workplaces and regular places of business, including movie theaters, stores, malls, casinos, senior centers, daycare centers (senior and daycare centers should limit communal gatherings, however), dormitories, public transportation and theme parks.
The City of Long Beach, in consultation with the Department of Health and Human Services, will regularly revisit this action and make adjustments accordingly and further guidance will be issued as necessary. The safety of the public will remain at the forefront of the City's decision-making process.
