Rural Matters
introA message from Jack Salo, Executive Director
Rural Health Network, like most organizations and businesses, has been working diligently over the past two weeks to transition from working at fixed locations to working remotely. As of Friday, March 20th, the majority of our staff are working remotely with the remainder to transition no later than next week. Our staff leaders and vendors have done an extraordinary job in supporting our workforce to make this transition.

On the program side, we are considering how our services and capacity can best meet the extraordinary needs that are emerging. We will continue to provide essential core services including Community Health Worker, transportation and information services. We also anticipate revision of some services and will be considering new or expanded services to meet priority needs during this time. A primary strategy will be to continue actively communicating with partner organizations to identify ways and initiate action that can support local efforts throughout the region.

Stay in touch and stay safe. If you learn of emerging needs, especially of the most vulnerable rural residents throughout our region and you think we could be of assistance, please contact me at 607 692 7669 or
[email protected]

I encourage you to continue reading to see how our programs have adapted so far. We will  publish updates to any additional impacts on our service delivery via our website at https://rhnscny.org/ and our Facebook page .

The Getthere Call Center has gone remote but will remain operational and at full capacity. We are committed to providing you with the best possible service during these difficult times. Please follow the Getthere website for the latest in transportation updates in our 5-county region.

Our Getthere Call Center remains in operation from 7 AM - 7 PM Monday-Friday. Anyone in Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Otsego, or Tioga County can contact us for information and assistance related to transportation needs.

In recent days, the Food and Health Network team has transitioned to working remotely and are adapting our work to best meet the emerging needs of the community and region in this rapidly changing environment. We are partnering with emergency food providers to assemble food boxes, direct referrals for home delivery, and are actively working to coordinate volunteers and share information on available resources. With schools closed, our farm to school procurement, taste tests, and other direct service is shifting to best support our schools, partners, families, and seniors. We are continuing to plan for the 2020 FVRx program while assisting our healthcare partners with meeting immediate food needs and considering how to best connect local farms and food businesses with consumers. Please connect with the FaHN team by email.

Resources to Support You
Responses to the current COVID-19 pandemic are changing rapidly. This first link has some great advice on managing information overload while the remaining links are some of the better sources of support we've seen this week.

To avoid information overload, stick to the facts, consult trusted sources, and limit checking sources to no more than three times a day.

We also encourage everyone to follow the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to slow the spread of coronavirus.  https://www.cdc.gov/ .

Really great tips from the NY State Office of Mental Health on managing anxiety in an anxiety-provoking situation.

For those now navigating how to work from home, these tips from the Montana Non-Profit Association are helpful.
