Changing lives at both ends of the leash!

Have your heard about our WAGS program? WAGS stands for "Working with Animals to Gain Socialization." This program was created through a unique partnership with Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution, which pairs teams of four inmates, who must apply for the program and meet qualifications, with a dog in need of extra training and/or socialization.

The dogs stay in the program for about 8 weeks to learn basic obedience and have their personalities and behaviors recorded throughout the process. The inmates care for the dogs 24/7, including feeding, exercising, socializing and training. Once a dog has graduated from the program, they return to CRHS with increased adoptablility and chance of finding a forever home.

The program has many benefits. Not only does it help our dogs find homes, but it has given the inmates a chance to give back to their community. They bond quickly to each dog we send and are always excited to help the next one. Staff at PDCI have also enjoyed the program- many of which adopt the dogs after graduation.

The WAGS program requires multiple moving parts to be successful but we are so grateful and excited for the continued opportunity to help more dogs find their forever home. If interested, w e have t-shirts for sale at the shelter to help fund the program!  If you'd like to read more about the WAGS program, check out our new WAGS web page here.

Is there a topic or program you'd like to hear more about? Let me know by sending an email to taylor.bates@couleehumane.com. As always, thank you for your continued support. We couldn't do what we do without you!

Sincerely,

Taylor Bates and WAGS graduates!

 Featured Pet: Stoli

Stoli is our current Resident Superstar! His adoption fee is waived to help him find a home.

Stoli is a big "beefcake" looking for a quiet home to help him come out of his shell. He's a 10+ year old neutered male that came to us as a stray.  He's had a rough life up until this point, but now he's ready to retire to a cozy home!

Stoli spent time in foster care gaining confidence and recovering from a recent dental procedure and kitty cold. When he's in the mood, Stoli adores attention, petting, and chin rubs. He'd love a big window to sunbathe in and watch the birds. He'll benefit from a patient person to give him plenty of one-on-one attention and teach him that he's safe and cared for. Give this sweet older man a chance and he'll win you over!
Stoli is looking for a calm home without boisterous dogs who may frighten him. He should not live with kids under 10, as he may nip when he's done being petted and startles easily. He should do well with other calm cats given a slow and proper introduction.

To learn more about Stoli or one of the many other animals available for adoption at the Coulee Region Humane Society , visit the shelter during our visiting hours from 1-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, or 1-7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

 Get Involved

There are several ways you can become more involved with our shelter. You can spend your free time socializing with the animals by becoming a volunteer , participate in and attend one of our many fundraisers or events , sponsor a kennel , become a foster parent or simply make a financial donation online. However you want to help, know that it is greatly appreciated and truly does impact the lives of the thousands of homeless animals that enter our shelter every year. We need your help to help them!
