BC Government Launches Restoring Confidence App

The Restoring Confidence App is part of the BC government’s Stronger BC for Everyone, Economic Recovery Plan. It was developed jointly by the Ministries of Jobs, Economic Development and Competitiveness; Health; and Citizens’ Services. The BC Restaurant and Foodservices Association has been a driving force behind the importance of a consumer confidence program to the industry’s recovery and has provided input into the program’s development.

The Restoring Confidence App creates custom local business posters for operators who register to put in their business window. The poster serves as a uniform symbol for customers that a business has committed to creating and sharing their COVID-19 Safety Plan. The poster will highlight each business’ core commitments to ensuring the safety of their guests and employees and to following the Public Health Orders (PHO).

On account of the ever-changing pandemic situation, consumers are confused about what measures businesses are supposed to be implementing. For example, some consumers are under the impression that all restaurant staff are required to wear masks, but this is not a requirement under the Public Health Orders (PHO) that mandate restaurant opening during the pandemic. The Local business poster program is designed as a tool for businesses of all types across several sectors to assist them in rebuilding relationships with their customers to establish confidence in returning to their physical location to shop, stay, dine or receive services.

The uniformity of using the same tool cross-sector will help consumers understand what ‘safe’ looks like.

Learn more by downloading the backgrounder here. To learn more about registering a business and obtaining a poster, visit the BC government website here.

State of Tourism in Canada
October Dashboard

The State of Tourism in Canada during COVID-19 Dashboard 2.0, compiled by Twenty31 analysts, provides a monthly snapshot of recent global, regional and domestic tourism health and economic updates, and insights on the impact of COVID-19 on the travel and tourism industry’s path to recovery. Insights are derived from a review of myriad global and Canadian media sources, associations, consultancies, and expert opinion from the tourism industry and government.

Key highlights:

  • Global COVID-19 cases are rising once again and there is fear that a second wave could thrust tourism businesses back into lockdown.

  • Although summer re-openings resulted in some positive gains for Canadian restaurants, bars, pubs, and some nightclubs, the travel and tourism industry as a whole is suffering. The UNWTO has confirmed massive losses in travellers and revenue since January.

  • Resident sentiment has significantly shifted from a month ago. There has been a positive move in sentiment towards travel to nearby communities and within the province. Aside from residents in Alberta, Canadian travellers mostly feel comfortable staying with their province.

  • Currently, European travellers are the most confident about international travel, and low-cost carriers may play a significant role in their route back to travel. As expected, and a positive for Canada, outdoor destinations remain bright spots and top of mind for potential travellers.

  • Pressure on airlines is building and risk is high. Despite this, airlines continue to schedule thousands of flights even as many of them will be canceled due to weak demand.

  • Hotel performance gains have slightly leveled off with the end of summer. Corporate and business travel is expected to remain at a standstill for the rest of 2020.

YTD Overnight Visitor Volume to Vancouver

After a solid start to the year (Jan-Feb), overnight visitation fell sharply in March before increasing again over the summer - but is still far from 2019 levels. YTD overnight visitation is down by -68% compared to the same time period last year.

Although domestic visitation has declined as well, Vancouver did see over 1.7 million overnight visitors from Canada, including nearly 900,000 from the rest of BC during this time period.

Workshops for Shoulder Season and the Culinary Sector
on the Sunshine Coast

November 19 & 20: 9am - 12pm

Sunshine Coast Tourism was one of two regions in BC selected to tap into the pilot project, Elevating Canadian Experiences. Coordinated by TIABC, our national counterparts at TIAC are offering a series of workshops across Canada that are designed to support, rebuild and grow Canada’s winter, shoulder season and culinary sector.

Originally designed to help bolster Canada’s tourism expansion in high-potential growth areas, the COVID-19 global health pandemic has drastically changed the tourism landscape in Canada. This has left tourism operators across the country worried about what this means for their future. In response, TIAC has pivoted the design of the workshops to reflect the new tourism reality for most operators. These workshops will now assist small and medium tourism operators and other tourism organizations across the country in developing strategies to maintain their businesses and develop winter and shoulder season and culinary experiences to attract visitors back once Canada is ready to welcome them again.

The time is now to come together and focus on capacity building content and strategy development. Please take advantage of this opportunity and register for this event ASAP!

Sustainable Tourism 2030 Seeks Your Input

Sustainable Tourism 2030 has recently launched their made-in-Canada Sustainable Tourism Destination Framework & Criteria to compliment their GSTC-recognized criteria and sustainability programs for tourism businesses.

The Sustainable Tourism Destination Framework is designed for tourism destinations to assess their level of sustainability based on internationally recognized sustainable tourism destination indicators from the UNWTO and Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC). The framework will help destinations to identify gaps, set goals, and create action plans that align with their destination development and management plans.

Sustainable Tourism 2030 is now actively seeking input from destination and industry partners to better understand priorities and goals when it comes to sustainability.

Sustainable Tourism 2030 have created a short survey and would greatly appreciate your participation and feedback. The survey will be open until December 1st.

As a thank you for your time, we are pleased to offer a complimentary assessment and sustainability scorecard based on our GSTC-aligned Sustainable Tourism Destination Criteria for your destination. This will assess your level of sustainability based on international standards, and identify where your destination is doing well, and where you have room for improvement.
