Weekly Update March 20, 2019

At long last Spring is here. This hasn't been a snowy winter but it was a "long, cold, lonely winter" for me. I am so happy to greet spring and sunny days this year.  April is just a few weeks away and that means Autism Awareness and Acceptance. It's a busy month for us here at the Center as you can imagine.

We kick off the Month with the Light It Up Blue Celebration at UMass Medical School on April 2nd. This is a fun family centered event with kid friendly activities, food and an information fair. We end the evening at 7:45 PM by going outside and watching the Medical School be illuminated with blue light.  See below for all the details .

Those who live in the North central Area are invited to join us at the Upper Common in Fitchburg on Sunday April 7th at 6:30 PM for Fitchburg's Light It Up Blue initiative. If you know of other events let us know and we can spread the word!

April 11th will find us at the State House with AFAM for Autism Advocacy Day . This is a great way to meet your legislators and share your story please click here for the legislative priorities for this year. If you cant make it to Boston  you can visit your Senator & Representative in their home office to share your story and help put a face to the issues.

April also includes a vacation week and we've activities planned for Tuesday through Friday including the annual Spring Egg Hunt and visit with the Bunny - always a favorite.

And because there is so much to do in terms of advocacy and celebrating we've spilled over into May for our Annual 5K Run and Walk . We hope if you've found classes here or activities for your kids we sponsor helpful that you will join us and help raise the funds that make all this possible. We can't do it without your support!

Have a great week .

Sue

The Story of Me  by Jill McConnell

HMEA's Autism Resource Central is a great organization that I have been involved with, in one way or another, for most of my life. As a sibling to an autistic brother, William, I have witnessed how the understanding and compassion for individuals on the spectrum has grown since the 1990s when we were children. In grade school, very few of my classmates knew what autism was and honestly a lot of adults did not know much either. I have seen the message change from AWARENESS to ACCEPTANCE, a change representative of a culture that seeks to not just recognize but love all in the community.
My family was part of this event when it was only the walk in the early 2000s. After I graduated from college, I saw that the event was adding a 5K run. The first year I ran, I did not have a team, just one friend and I came to run in honor of my brother. Now this is my 6th year running the event, and William's 3rd year running. Each year, I have been humbled by the support we receive from all of our family and friends!
After a few years of running in the event, I had some ideas which would help to expand the event to more of the local running community. When I was offered the opportunity to be part of the committee for the 2018 event, I of course said, "YES." I returned again this year and continue help the committee make the event the best it can be! I am proud to help the Autism Resource Central in this endeavor each year because I know that they help families like mine as they face various hurdles in all life stages. Autism Spectrum Disorder is very diverse and there is no one size fits all, but the Autism Resource Central will help guide you to the best services, latest research, and a community that truly understands what you are facing.
I hope that you will join me on May 5th  and come out for a day of running, walking, and family fun in support of a great cause!
