30 Participate in National History Day
Thirty eighth grade students from Jack Young Middle School took part in the Regional National History Day event in Madison on February 23rd, 2019. Fourteen students were selected as state finalists and will go on to represent their school at the state competition, which takes place at the University of Wisconsin - Madison on April 13th, 2019.

National History Day is an academic enrichment program for students in grades 6-12. Students select topics connected to an annual theme and complete their own in-depth research on the topic. This year, the annual theme is "Triumph and Tragedy." Students present their conclusions by creating museum-style exhibits, media documentaries, research papers, interactive websites, and dramatic performances.

The regional event is the second step in a competition cycle that can take students from the school level to regional, state, and national competitions. The school-level competition took place at JYMS on January 25, 2019. At each level of competition students share their work with their peers, historians, educators, and professionals in related fields as they complete for special awards and the opportunity to advance to the next level of competition.

Students who are moving on to the State Competition include:

PERFORMANCES
Anna Balfanz, Ignas Dauksys, and Grace Holt - Irena Sendler: Triumph and Tragedy in a Glass Jar
Georgy Fadeyev, Casey Klipp, Sarah Palecek - Lowell Mill Girls: Tragedy at the Mill leads  to Triumph in the World
Joe Nelson - Harry Houdini: Triumph and Tragedy in Magic and Film

WEBSITES
Derek Gehin and Kason Bode - Challenger Disaster: Tragedy, then Triumph
Connor Kleist, Brent Littlegeorge and Cameron Meise - The Christmas Truce: Triumph and Tragedy during WWI

EXHIBITS
Molly Brenson and Hailey Johnson - The Titanic Tragedy

Students who were chosen as Alternates to the State Competition include:
Leisha Hallis, Maddy McLaughlin, and Morgan Owen - The Destruction of Pompeii

Additional Students who competed at Regionals include:
Claire Teska, Kyla Von Asten, Romeo Lythjohan, Dominic Gray, Jaron Laukant, Julia Tse, Annika Barnard, Amara Mattice, Ayla School, Lexi Duhr, Gabbie Zautke, Reese Sherman, and Xander Marvin.

Participation in the program continues to grow with more than 500,000 students participating annually across the nation. The National History Day program in Wisconsin is coordinated by the Wisconsin Historical Society.

NF Students Snow Shoe Through the Prairie
Mr. Gary Williams of Summer Outdoor Adventure Club (SOAC) took North Freedom students on a snowshoeing hike the week of February 11-15.

Lower grades (K-2) snowshoed around the prairie, but the older grades (3-5) climbed up the hill behind the school!  The students were tired and some struggled, but it led to good conversations about determination and perseverance.

Mr. Williams taught the students about animal habitats, various animal tracks and scat, prairie and forest plants, and how to enjoy the outdoors.

This fun and educational adventure was funded courtesy of the North Freedom Activity Account. These activities are made possible because of the boxtops, milk caps and other items the children collect. North Freedom students and their teachers have enjoyed this experience for more than 10 years!
