The collection includes 21 items, specifically, two holograph Ontario diaries by Alexander D. Bruce, one 61 page diary (March 1884-April 15, 1885) one 64 page diary (Apr. 10, 1886, to Apr. 23, 1887, three holograph letters and 4 Cheese Factory related documents, Crofting Agreement dated Markham, 23 April 1844 plus 9 original photos of family members and one large photo copy of 15 other family members. These Bruce family members were very successful Scottish emigrants in 1842 to Upper Canada (Markham area) in business, farming, milling (Carrick Mills renamed later to Bruce's Mill). They were all very active politically as evidenced by the content, authors and other people referred to. Joyce Cary was an Anglo-Irish novelist and artist with a place in three literatures (English, Irish, Nigerian) His most well-known book was The Horse's Mouth. He developed a trilogy form in which each volume is narrated by one of three protagonists. Cary is often identified with Modernism. Charles Dudley Warner was an American essayist, novelist, lawyer. After the Clemens family moved to Hartford in 1871, Warner and Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain) became friends, and collaborated on The Gilded Age (1873-74). It is for his share in this book, the first novel by either writer, that Warner is now best remembered. Warner was assistant editor (1860) and editor (1861-7) of The Hartford Press, and after The Press was merged into The Hartford Courant, was co-editor with Joseph R. Hawley; in 1884 he joined the editorial staff of Harper's Magazine, for which he conducted "The Editor's Drawer" until 1892, when he took charge of "The Editor's Study." He died in Hartford on the 20th of October 1900.

Taylor, Bert Leston was a journalist, doggerel poet, and humorist. At the height of his literary career, he was a central literary figure of the early 20th century Chicago renaissance as well as one of the most celebrated columnists in the United States.

William Bliss Carman (poet, essayist, journalist). As an integral member of the Confederation School of Canadian poetry, Carman's work helped to shape a poetic voice in Canada. He is best remembered as a lyrical poet of the Maritime landscape.

Gertrude Atherton was a prominent and prolific American author. In addition to novels, she wrote short stories, essays, and articles for magazines and newspapers on such issues as feminism, politics, and war. Atherton was an early feminist well acquainted with the plight of women. She was strong-willed, independent-minded, and sometimes controversial. Charlotte S. McClure in a Dictionary of Literary Biography essay said that Atherton "redefined women's potential and presented a psychological drama of a woman's quest for identity and for a life purpose and happiness within and beyond her procreative function"... A 28 piece collection of ephemera spanning two generations of a well to do family headed by first Nathaniel Clarke Wallace (1844-1901) [8 items] and his son, T. G. (Thomas George) Wallace (1879-1921) 20 items].

The family was based in Woodbridge, Ontario however were located in Ottawa given each of these two men were both Members of Parliament. These pieces of ephemera include Government, Social and Formal Dinner  invitations and even a law act where N.C. Wallace was deeply involved.

George Washington Cable was an American novelist and reformer being notable for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life in his native New Orleans, Louisiana. Field Marshal Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington  Autograph letter (unsigned). Two pages. 8vo. Dated Walmer Castle August 17, 1852. About a month after this letter was written, Wellington died on 14 September 1852, aged 83 at Walmer Castle.
