Great milk comes from happy cows and happy cows come from California, according to the Real California Milk commercials. Japanese Wagyu beef cows spend their days being massaged daily, and get fed beer or sake. Wine from Bordeaux has a similarly rich story, of the generations of French expertise that guide the grape's journey from vine to barrel.
Existing agricultural work visa schemes could be expanded as the Federal Government scrambles to help farmers find enough workers for the coming harvest. The Weekly Times understands the Government is looking at short-term options to help address the current labour shortage, as an agriculture-specific visa looks to be completely off the table.

Let’s hope they get this sorted before the next olive harvest.

Science needs your help! Olive pomace wanted
The Solid Waste Management group at The University of Queensland is studying new techniques for the management of olive pomace, and is looking for samples of olive pomace to work with.
The techniques include self-sustained smouldering, a form of flameless combustion (similar to a burning cigarette) which works at very high moisture content and without constant energy input. Other advantages are the low cost of equipment, fast process and adaptability to different waste generation rates. The resulting ash may be used as fertilizer as an alternative to composting.
Smouldering has been successfully proved for waste streams such as faeces, vegetable and animal waste, and olive pomace is seen as a promising product for the process due to its high water content, energetic value and phosphorous and potassium content.
Anyone with samples of olive pomace available is asked to email project management Luis Yerman at l.yermanmartinez@uq.edu.au.
A story on glyphosate, the active ingredient in the popular weed killer RoundUp and other herbicide products, aired on Monday 8 October 2018 on ABC’s 4 Corners. This story centres on a court case in September this year, where a Californian jury found in favour of a plaintiff who alleged exposure to RoundUp had resulted in terminal non-Hodgkinson Lymphoma.
