The Many Ways in Which Dogs Serve Us

Dogs are known as man's best friend! Well, they may well also be man's best helper. Dogs can serve us in a variety of ways, but not all dogs are "service dogs". Let's discuss a few of the groups in which dogs act as caregivers, and what the differences are!

A Service Dog is a dog trained for the purpose of performing specific tasks for a specific individual, specifically an individual with a disability. The law also allows service dogs to accompany their owners everywhere.

A Therapy Dog is owned by a handler and visits a variety of clients. These dogs are trained to provide comfort, companionship, or stimulation to the client. A therapy dog may be registered with a larger organization. The law does not require businesses to allow therapy dogs.

An Emotional Support Dog is pet that has been identified by a physician as a necessary tool for an individual's treatment. The owner must have a verifiable disability in order for the pet to be classified as a support animal. The law does not require businesses to allow support animals.

Introducing You to Our Clients
Meet Jessica....

This is Jessica, 29, and her husband, Jeff, with their kids aged 18 months and 4 years. Jessica
recently became paralyzed from Transverse Myelitis of her cervical spinal cord and brain stem. Jeff has had to cut back on his hours to assist in Jessica's care, as well as incurring child care expenses during this unexpected medical emergency. NAF was contacted to help this young family with their major expenses for two months while they navigate their way forward. We are so honored to be assisting in any way we can.
"Thank you for all your help. We appreciate you and your team for helping us through this time"...Jessica.

Meet Gretchen....

Gretchen, age 55. Living with C4 spinal cord injury from a fall.

Gretchen needs caregiver support at her home as she isn't able to independently care for herself. Her insurance coverage left a gap between her release from rehab and the beginning of her attendant care which NAF filled by paying for her in-home care until her insurance was activated.
Meet Connor....

Connor, age 16, was in a car accident and sustained a C4 spinal cord injury. He is living with tetraplegia and needed bathroom modifications which NAF was honored to help provide. He is pictured here with his mother. A note from her is below:
"Connor and I cannot thank you enough for all of your help.  He is so excited to finally be able to take a shower again.  Hygiene is critically important and we both know it, but it has been one of the most difficult areas to overcome.  Thank you for giving him his dignity back and I appreciate the smile you gave him more than you can imagine - Deanna"

Meet Blanca....

Blanca, age 26. Living with Cerebral Palsy and scoliosis

Blanca's doctor said she needed a specialized gait trainer but her social worker at the hospital wasn't able to find any agencies who could provide the funding for one. She contacted NAF as a final resort and we were able to provide a Moxie gait trainer with specialized trunk, leg and ankle support.
THANK YOU To All of Our 2018 Sponsors

We could not serve our clients without your unwavering support. Thank you for all of your support!

We Need Your Help

Donate ~ Sponsor ~ Volunteer

Your $25 donation will help provide clean catheters to a paralyzed child for one month when their insurance won't cover the expense.

Your $100 donation will help build a wheelchair ramp so we can get our clients out of rehab and through their front door at home.

Your $200 donation will help widen the doorways in their homes so their wheelchair can fit through the bathroom door. Insurance doesn't covers home modifications.

Your $500 donation will help provide life-changing medical equipment: wheelchairs and specialized shower chairs, etc. Most insurance only covers a small part of wheelchairs, if any, and no "bathing aids" are covered.

No donation is too small. Click here for more information.
