Greetings to all of my fellow veterans and DAV Members.
I want to thank all of Members who attended the DAV National Mid-Winter Conference February 24-27. Our National Legislative Staff did a wonderful job providing detailed information on DAV 's Critical Policy Goals.
I want to thank our fellow Chapter 10 Members for joining me at the DAV Department of Virginia Commander's Coffee and met with our Legislators: Jim Procunier, Jeremy Villanueva, Jesse Bendahan, Richard Lane, Monti Zimmerman, Terri Williams, and Shane Liermann.
I was fortunate to chat with our recent Guest Speakers, the Board of Veterans Appeals Chairman Cheryl Mason and the VA Under Secretary for Benefits, Dr. Paul Lawrence at the DAV National Commander's Reception.

Due to scheduling conflicts, we have moved our March Meeting to the 4th Saturday of the Month. So that means our next meeting is Saturday, March 23, 2019. We will be providing the 2nd reading to the proposed changes to the Chapter Constitution and Bylaws. We hope to see you there!

DAV's Mid-Winter Conference
The National DAV Legisaltive Mid-Winter Conference was a resounding success this past week. Mid-Winter, sponsored by the State Commanders & Adjutants Association, kicked off on Sunday, February 24th with the Opening Session where the National Legislative Staff provided a comprehensive look at DAV's Critical Policy Goals for 2019. It culminated with DAV National Commander Dennis Nixon providing his testimony before a Joint Session of the Senate and House Veterans Affairs Committees. Expediting Claims for Purple Heart Medal Recipients
VA Secretary, Robert Wilkie announced on February 26, 2019, that the VA will
accelerate disability benefits claims processing for Purple Heart Medal recipients. "Those who hold the Purple Heart, the recognition of wounds taken in battle, will now receive priority consideration when it comes to claims before the Department of Veterans Affairs," said Secretary Wilkie. The Veterans Benefits Administration will amend its priority processing categories to include initial claims received from Purple Heart recipients on or after April 1, 2019. Purple Heart recipients are already treated on a priority basis at VA hospitals and are exempt from co-payments for their medical care. To read more, Click Here!

Women in Military Service for America (WIMSA) Memorial
in Arlington, Virginia. Sponsored by VA's Center for Women's Veterans, the event will feature 15 women Veterans representing all branches of military service in a 2019 campaign titled "Trailblazers: Women Breaking Barriers," celebrating the contributions of women Veterans in honor of Women's History Month and continuing through the rest of the year. Women have served in the United States military with distinction for generations- from Women's Army Corps, Women Accepted for Volunteer Services and Women Airforce Service Pilots (better known as the WACs, WAVEs and WASPs) of World War II to combat nurses in Korea and Vietnam to Female Engagement Teams in Afghanistan. DAV Women Veterans Report: The Journey Forward
DAV's Women Veterans: The Journey Ahead follows our 2014 report Women Veterans: The Long Journey Home, giving credit for the work done and successes achieved while also spotlighting remaining needs and making recommendations for a road map forward. The journey ahead is not just for women veterans. The Department of Veterans Affairs, among other institutions, has a responsibility to provide and administer effective programs, services and benefits these women have earned. Specifically, VA has an opportunity to utilize what we've learned about this population to transform the department with women veterans central to planning and decision making during this period of significant reform.
