"Saint Sarkis Church welcomes a new pastor, Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian"  May 22, 2005
Reported by Dr. Louiza Kubikian

On May 22, 2005, St. Sarkis Church welcomed its third pastor, Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian. Der Nareg's installation took place during the 15th Anniversary celebration of the church, which marked yet another beginning in the history of the Church, the ministry of its youngest priest.

As Pastor, Der Hayr has performed his religious duties on the Altar and in the Armenian community with dignity, delivering inspirational sermons to the faithful and has continued the programs already established in the church.

But, his greatest asset was his youth. He  established a strong connection with the younger generation through programs initiated by him such as weekly Bible Study classes for young adults ages 20-35. Der Hayr also became a major force in getting the younger generation more involved in the spiritual and service projects of the Church. Der Nareg worked tirelessly with the auxiliary bodies and their activities as well as the operational details of a very complex and active church.

Having a Der Hayr had additional benefits, Yeretzkin Annie. Her gentle and youthful energy was and is felt throughout the church. During the first years she sang in the Choir, helped with the Senior Citizen program and taught students at the Sunday and Saturday Language School. She is the honorary chair lady of the Ladies Guild.

In the past 15 years, Der Nareg has earned the respect and love of all St. Sarkis parishioners. Under his energetic leadership some existing programs such as Children's Summer Camp and Saturday and Sunday Schools enrollment were greatly expanded. He added new programs such as,Young Adults Group and Bible Study, and Salt and Light Youth Ministry which has engaged youngsters and parents.

Rev Fr. Nareg Terterian is a graduate of the Armenian Theological Seminary in Lebanon, he holds a Masters Degree in Pastoral Theology from St. John"s University (2010) and a degree of Master of Science in Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from St. John"s University (2015). He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the State of New York.

Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian, baptismal name Serop, was born in Kessab Syria. After completing his primary education, at 13 years old he enrolled in the Armenian Theological Seminary of the Great House of Cilicia in Bikfaya, Lebanon. At the seminary, he was ordained deacon in 1988 by His Eminence  Bishop Dirair Panossian.

Among his many teachers who had a profound influence on the young deacon were the late Archbishop Ardavast Terterian, Vicar General of the Catholicosate who taught philosophy and psychology, the late Archbishop Zareh Aznavorian who taught Biblical Studies and Archbishop Shahan Sarkissian who taught patristics.

Der Nareg and Yeretsgin Annie are blessed with three children: Hovsep, Laurie and Avedis.

FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE (5.1-14)
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us-whatever we ask-we know that we have what we asked of him.
If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that. All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the one who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him. We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true-even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO JOHN (12.12-23)
The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, "Hosanna!", "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!", "Blessed is the King of Israel!"
Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, "Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey's colt."
At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him.
Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him. So the Pharisees said to one another, "See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!"
Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. "Sir," they said, "we would like to see Jesus." Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.
Jesus replied, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

Liturgical Calendar (Crossroads)
SECOND PALM SUNDAY
This Sunday (May 24) is Second Palm Sunday (Yerkrort Tzaghkazard). The seventh Sunday of Easter is called Second Palm Sunday because of the readings of that day (the readings and hymns of Palm Sunday are repeated). Beginning with New Sunday and continuing until Pentecost, the Armenian Church reads from the four Gospels every day in their proper order. Luke is read in the morning; John at midday; Matthew at the beginning of the evening hour; and Mark at the end of the evening hour. The sections related to Christ's entry into Jerusalem coincide with the seventh Sunday of Easter, hence the designation of "Second Palm Sunday."

There are several feast days in our liturgical calendar dedicated to St. Gregory the Illuminator, but according to tradition he is also remembered on the fourth day of Hambardzoum, which is Second Palm Sunday. During the years of Gregory's imprisonment in the deep pit his guardian angel would appear daily to give him nourishment. On the fourth day of the Ascension the angel did not come, and the next day Gregory asked why. The angel told him that the fourth day of Ascension is the feast day for his celestial army of the 4th rank, and he was permitted to remain in the heavens to celebrate the feast day and enjoy Christ in heaven.

A tradition has come down to us concerning the mysterious meaning of this great and wonderful feast; the Enlightener of our souls heard from his guardian angel: On this day there is a great feast in the heavens in my rank. For during the ascent of the heavenly One from earth the heavenly spirits in their ranks celebrated this event with rejoicing, beginning with the angels and concluding with the thrones. The illuminator's guardian angel being from the fourth rank hastened to share in the joyful celebration of which the angel in the flesh learned when he asked him a question. This great mystery took place for the salvation of the logical of angels and mankind so that both of them might unite in one.
(From the Liturgical Canons of the Armenian Church for the first Sunday after Christ's Ascension, known as Second Palm Sunday).

LIGHT A VIRTUAL CANDLE

During these uncertain times, we welcome you to the practice of lighting a virtual candle.

Lighting a candle is a way of extending one's prayer and showing solidarity with the person on whose behalf the prayer is offered.

"When Jesus spoke to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12

This Sunday Rev. Fr. Nareg Terterian personally will light a candle for every donation received.
