Canadian Students Complete NYCPM Rotation

Three senior students from the
Université du Québec à Trois Rivières (UQTR)
spent eight (elective) weeks at NYCPM this winter, focusing on podiatric imaging, podopediatrics and podiatric medicine and surgery. We are expecting more students this summer. APMWA Announces 33rd Annual Student Writing Competition
The American Podiatric Medical Writers Association (APMWA) has announced its 33
rd
Annual Student Writing Competition.
- Papers must be non-technical in nature, i.e., on any topic that would be suitable for a lay publication.
- There is no word limit. Papers will be graded for content, style, grammar, neatness, and overall impact.
- First prize: $1,000, Second prize: $750, Third prize: $500. Prizes are sponsored by an APMA Educational Foundation endowment from Dr. and Mrs. Steven Berlin, and include recognition in the APMA NEWS and the APMWA Newsletter. Honorable Mention Certificates may also be awarded.
- The competition is open to any enrolled podiatric student.
- Entries must be received by 4/1/19 via e-mail to [email protected].
- Entries become the property of APMWA, which may arrange publication of the entry.

NYCPM honored FCNY Trustee Harold Wolchok with a plaque that recognizes him for donating several hundred fiction and nonfiction books to the NYCPM Library.

Tippett (2019) Receives Michael Stone Award from ABFAS

In February ABFAS presented the Michael Stone Outstanding Professional Conduct Award to one student from each of the nine podiatric colleges at its 45
th
annual meeting. Each college selects a student annually who embodies the highest standards of professionalism, deportment and ethics in the student's interactions with peers, patients, professors and staff. NYCPM's choice is Caroline Tippett of the Class of 2019! Winners receive a $2,000 cash award. Congratulations!

Joseph Starr, DPM ('40) Turns 100
Dr. Joseph Starr holds his great-grandson.
Joseph Starr, DPM (1940) has informed Footprints that he celebrated his 100th birthday last June! Dr. Starr is a daily reader of PM News, and comments, "It amazes me how the profession has improved and moved closer to another degree change - MD. I am so proud of how podiatry has changed since I went to classes at the college." Congratulations Dr. Starr!

Dr. Shapiro ('86) Dips for Charity
For the 11th time, Andrew Shapiro, DPM ('86) joined the Long Beach (NY) Polar Bear Club Dip in the Atlantic Ocean on Super Bowl Sunday (February 3) as part of a fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. An estimated 5,000 brave souls participated, and according to PM News, organizers expect to raise over $500,000 from this event.
