Welcoming Covenant
In the name of God and Jesus Christ, the Hingham Congregational Church
welcomes all who seek to know and worship God, and invites everyone to join
in our mission through participation and leadership of the congregation.
As a community of faith, we take seriously the biblical call to love God and our
neighbors as ourselves, and recognize that, although we are many members,
we are one.
❖ We celebrate the uniqueness of everyone.
❖ We rejoice in our diversity of views and understandings of our shared faith.
❖ We affirm relationships based on love, commitment, and mutual respect.
❖ As is stated in our by-laws, we strive for righteousness, justice and peace.
It is with this spirit and the love of God that we openly welcome all persons,
inclusive of every race, ethnicity, class, age, gender, physical or mental ability,
sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, and inclusive of any
others, to journey with us as we move forward with the work of this church in the
world.
No Sunday School program this week.

Call to Worship by Nancy Townley Rev. Dr. Peter W. Allen
Leader: God’s greatness is wondrous to behold.
All: Everywhere we look, we can see the imprint of the Divine.
Leader: From the loftiest mountains to the crashing waters of the sea,
All: There God’s greatness stands majestically.
Leader: God’s greatness can be within the human heart.
All: Let us honor and praise God with acts of loving kindness and compassion.

Sing Praise to God, Our Highest Good
|
Sing praise to God, our highest good, profound respect ex-
pressing, God gives us health, life, livelihood, with every
needed blessing. To God, who wondrous works performs, cre-
ating life and calming storms, to God give praise and glory!
Creation thanks you, Holy One: you made us and re-
new us. Delighted at what you have done, you show your
Greatness through us. So may all living things proclaim the
Wonders of their Maker’s name: to God give praise and glory!
Forever with us, God is here, Nor ever will desert us.
So dearly loved, we shall not fear: there’s nothing that can hurt us.
We place our trust in God’s command, who leads us with a mother’s hand: to God Give praise and glory!
Dear Christian friends, we bear the name of Christ, our sure salvation.
Let us recall Christ Jesus came, most holy incarnation,
Came from the one God we adore, came with new life for evermore:
To God give praise and glory!

*Opening Prayer (in unison)
God of mystery and community, you have called us together today to remind us of who you are and of the journey you set before us. Help us to pay attention to the wisdom of scripture, of our ancestors and leaders, of our neighbors, and of our own hearts. Remind us that success is not measured in numbers, but in faithfulness. Enable us to truly be your disciples in this world. We pray in the spirit of Jesus...
(Silence)
Lord’s Prayer
Our Father* who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
*Please feel free to pray as you wish. We respect tradition — and we welcome images of the Divine that are diverse and inclusive.

Ministry of the Word
Scripture Reading: Isiah 51:1, Psalm 51:10-17, Matthew 5:1-12
| |
|
Isaiah 51:1 Blessings in Store for God’s People
Listen to me, you that pursue righteousness,
you that seek the Lord.
Look to the rock from which you were hewn,
and to the quarry from which you were dug
Psalm 51:10-17
Create in me a clean heart, O God,
and put a new and right spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence,
and do not take your holy spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation,
and sustain in me a willing spirit.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
and sinners will return to you.
Deliver me from bloodshed, O God,
O God of my salvation,
and my tongue will sing aloud of your deliverance.
O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
For you have no delight in sacrifice;
if I were to give a burnt-offering, you would not be pleased.
The sacrifice acceptable to God is a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Matthew 5:1-12 The Beatitudes
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
‘Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
‘Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
‘Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
‘Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
‘Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

O Beautiful for Spacious Skies
|
O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountains majesties Above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee.
And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea.
O beautiful for pilgrim feet, whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat Across the wilderness!
America! America! God mend thy every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self control, Thy liberty in law.
O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved, Any mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine,
Till all success be nobleness, And every gain divine.
O beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears!
America! America! May God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shing sea. Amen.

Congregational Commissioning (in unison)
Brothers and sisters, may we leave this place of worship with
Christ’s spirit in our hearts. May we encourage the fainthearted: help the weak; practice patience with all; seek to do good;
rejoice always; pray without ceasing and give thanks in all
circumstances. For this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for us.
Praise be to God!
