A Message from ORES Principal Denise Francisco
Oak Ridge Community,

This week’s note begins with a shout out to both the Battle of the Books Team and the Odyssey of the Mind Team. We are so proud of these groups – and the adults who supported their journey! There are many opportunities available for students to explore a variety of interests at Oak Ridge Elementary including the Jump Rope Team, Go Far Team, Chess Club, Colts Chorale, and Student Council.

Do you know a family that has a rising Kindergartner? If so, please spread the word that Kindergarten Registration will begin on April 8th.

This will be a busy week for our school. On Monday and Tuesday, our 4th graders travel to Haw River for a field trip. The Student Council hosts the American Red Cross Blood Drive on Wednesday from 2:00-6:30. Thursday, Oak Ridge will be the host site for the March Principal Meeting and we will have several guests in our building observing classroom instruction. Finally, on Friday three of our 5th grade classes travel to Charlotte Motor Speedway for a field trip focusing on forces and motion.

Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 20th. This is Student Led Conference Night. On this night each year we open our gym to a variety of organizations that host summer camps. You can visit the Summer Camp Expo before heading down to your child’s classroom. Also, that same night the Book Fair will be open in the Media Center. Don’t forget to also visit your child’s specialist teachers and any support staff that work with your child each day. Everyone will be here that night and available to answer your questions.

The 2019-2020 and the 2020-2021 GCS Calendars have been approved by the Board of Education. You can view the calendars on the GCS Website by clicking this live link. The first day of school for next year is August 26th.

Thank you for your continued support,

Fabulous 1st Grade Folk Music Concert, Thursday, April 11
On Thursday, April 11 at 6:00 PM, First Grade students will present a fabulous and fun folk music night!

Please join us in the gym at 6:00 PM and come prepared to sing and dance too! Your children are looking forward to teaching you some of the skills they have learned in music.

Dress: Your student should wear comfortable shoes and a light colored solid top. This is so they can move safely and easily and so that we can see all their expressive faces as they perform. Thank you!
Second-graders need to be able to tie knots!!! A note from Ms. Hodnett
Second graders are beginning their first weavings with yarn and are very excited! This fun and achievable weaving will become a treasured artwork. However to make this a positive experience from beginning to end, and for me to keep this a second-grade project, all second graders should be able to tie simple overhand knots to tie off their weavings when they finish!!!

In Art Class we say, “Around behind and through to make a cursive Q!” or “Around behind and through like you’re tying a shoe”, and then repeat to seal the knot! 😊
