Research identifying climate change resistant species
Which Plant Where Researcher Alessandro Ossola is performing climate testing on plants to determine their resilience to climate change.
Around 100 plant species have been identified as the champions of climate change under a $10 million, five-year joint research project Which Plant Where, which aims to achieve greater environmental sustainability in urban green spaces.
More than 13,000 individual plants and over 500 popularly planted tree and plant species were put through rigorous testing and bioclimatic models to see how each would perform in the years 2030, 2050 and 2070. Many failed to make the cut.
The research findings will be used to create an online tool to identify species resilient to climate change and better matched to appropriate climatic conditions around Australia, future-proofing urban landscapes.
