Updates from Mission Valley ROP's
Culinary Arts Courses

Thank you for your continued support as an advisory member for Mission Valley ROP's Culinary Arts Course. We want to stay connected with you and look forward to upcoming collaborations in the near future.
Class Updates - Chef Mari Moschetti (Kennedy High School)

Chef Moschetti's students wowed everyone with their "Spice of Life" project this year. Each cooking team selected one spice and conducted in depth research about their selected spices origin, health benefits, cost, and much more. Students from each team really dedicated themselves to the project creating a tri-fold poster board with photos and detailed information about each spice.

In addition, carefully selected recipes featuring each spice was cooked by each team and meticulously presented for judging. Each student represented their team with such poise, expertise on their spice, and confidence. The following spices were represented - Berbere, Cilantro, Saffron, Oregano, Garlic, and Cinnamon.

Judges visited each station with much anticipation and taste tested each item with their clipboard and pencil in hand ready to determine how many points to give each station. Lot's of Q&A went on between students and judges during the competition in order to see how well the students knew their chosen spice. Interesting facts were shared such as "About 200-500 stigmas make up a single gram of saffron, and usually there are only three per flower".

The winner was determined to be "Saffron", with "Berbere" as a close second! Chef Moschetti said "This was by far our best Spice of Life project!"

Class Updates - Chef Jo Roberts (Bridgepoint High School)

Chef Roberts and her Bridgepoint students took on the challenge of feeding the entire staff and students on campus at Bridgepoint High School. The selected menu included smoked turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, salad, and dinner rolls. A few culinary students helped to serve the delicious meal along with some Bridgepoint staff. The meal was enjoyed by everyone and the only thing better than the food was the opportunity to have the entire school together sharing a meal.

Class Updates - Chef Vivien Buhain (Washington High School)

Chef Buhain and her amazing second year culinary students exemplified professionalism, confidence, and cooking skills as they helped to cater Mission Valley ROP's Educational Brunch on the morning of Feb. 7th. Fifty three counselors, administrators, career techs, and board member representatives attended the event and enjoyed cooked to order gourmet scrambled eggs along with other goodies provided by a few other ROP Culinary Instructors.
