The Lexington Board of Selectmen has officially received approval to change their name to the Lexington Select Board. The change was voted at the  2019 Annual Town Meeting , then sent to the   Massachusetts Legislature   through our representatives, and finally signed by Governor Charlie Baker.

We currently are working to make the changes to signage, our website, and other documents that make reference to the Board of Selectmen, so they accurately reflect the new name.

Residents Aged 65+ May Be Eligible to Defer FY2020 Property Taxes
If you are a Lexington resident aged 65 or older with a 2018 gross household income of $75,000 or less, you can postpone paying all or any part of your property tax bill and let the value of your house pay the tax bill later.

Eligible residents who defer their property tax use the money for a variety of purposes. For some, it helps pay for needed home repairs or enhancements. Others find that a deferral simply helps them with their daily needs.

Please share the details of this program with friends, family, or neighbors in Lexington who might benefit from the assistance from property tax relief.

More details, including a brochure detailing State and local property tax programs, is available at the Assessor’s Office in the Town Office Building and at the Community Center, or can be downloaded at  LexingtonMA.gov/TaxRelief .

Call the Assessor’s Office at 781-698-4578 for information about Lexington’s Property Tax Deferral Program and other local tax programs.

On January 2, Diamond Middle School began piloting the Lexington Public School’s Food Rescue Program, which will aid in reducing food waste while helping tackle the issue of food insecurity. The program is anticipated to expand district-wide in the future, pending the outcome of the pilot program.

The Food Rescue Program is a collaborative effort by Whitson’s Food Services staff, school staff, Lexington Public Schools Green Teams (LPSGT) parent volunteers, Food Link, and the Lexington Office of Public Health.

At the 2019 Annual Town Meeting, the Town passed bylaw changes about Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Food Serviceware and Packaging Reduction/Single-Use Plastic Beverage Straw and Stirrer Reduction.

These changes became effective January 1, 2020 and impact certain retailers and businesses in Lexington.

The purpose of these bylaws is to eliminate the usage of:
  • single-use EPS food serviceware and packaging
  • single-use plastic straws
  • single-use plastic stirrers

by all food establishments, retail stores, and Town buildings/premises in the Town of Lexington.

By restricting the sale and distribution of these products and promoting the use of reusable or compostable products instead, this bylaw will help protect public health and the natural environment, waterways and wildlife.

TOWN MANAGER'S WORD
A new segment featuring an update on a project or priority Town Manager Jim Malloy is working on.
The Town recently went through a Request for Proposal process to ensure a long term relationship at the Munroe Building. We’re pleased to announce that the Town has awarded a 10-year lease to the Munroe Center for the Arts!

We’re negotiating the lease agreement right now, which will assist the Munroe Center for the Arts in fundraising for building improvements, so they can continue to provide a quality arts venue for our community into the future.
