Stopped in our Tracks

As we all know too well, the most essential, and expensive, items to fix seem to break at the most inconvenient times. In February alone, Midcoast Humane’s heat stopped working, septic failed, washing machines broke, and transporter vans reached their final legs. Money certainly isn’t plentiful around the shelter, so we had to dig deep into our resourceful Maine roots to get creative and keep moving forward.

Here’s where you, our community of supporters and partners, step in.

A purrfect example of how this community stepped up to make a tough month a little easier is when our Sprinter Van, used to rescue out-of-state animals, broke down in Maryland while we were transporting dogs and cats from our Georgia rescue partner  Castoff Pet Rescue . Thankfully, everyone made it safely back to Maine in the Castoff van because of the quick thinking of Midcoast Humane staff and Castoff Pet Rescue volunteers.

Unfortunately, the $7,000 bill that came with the repair of the van was way more than we could afford (and due to the nature of the repairs, our only option was to work with the dealership that repairs Mercedes Sprinters.) So, we crossed our fingers and hoped that we could raise the money we needed to get back on the road as soon as possible as lives were depending on our ability to get to get back to our rescue partners.

Andrea Shaw, rescue mom of  Adventures of Columbo and creator of  The Columbo Fund , volunteered to take action with her 18,000 Facebook followers (a.k.a. “Beeps”). Within days, 229 of Columbo’s supporters, many of whom live outside of Midcoast Humane’s territory, had raised $5,971.86! We are beyond amazed by their outpouring of support. Along with Columbo’s campaign, Midcoast got the word out about the van on our Facebook page, and were incredibly grateful that local donors were able to help us reach our goal.

In total, the campaign raised $7,254.36! We are so grateful.

As you can imagine, maintenance doesn’t come cheap for this 60-plus-animal capacity van. So we are also relieved to have a few extra dollars set aside for future maintenance.

As we enter March, we see glimmers of light…you.

We cannot serve our 40-community territory without your support. Thank you for considering how you can help us continue to make life better for animals, and people, in our community.  Make a donation online , call us at 207-449-1366, or mail a gift to Midcoast Humane, 190 Pleasant Street, Brunswick, ME 04011.

P.S. We are looking to replace our current minivan that we use for transporting animals between shelters, delivering donations, food, and other shelter essentials around our 40-community territory. Our wish is for a "gently used" minivan with less than 100k miles that is in working order and will pass state inspection. We are happy to pay for licensing/title transfer. Thank you in advance for any leads. Please contact Trendy at 207-449-1366 or email tstanchfield@midcoasthumane.org.

P.P.S. A huge thank you to Michael Carrington, Carrie Kipfer, Connie Amnott Parks, and Christina Roman, who each donated a used washing machine. You would never imagine how much laundry we go through in a day!

Quotes for Good with State Farm - all month long!

Midcoast Humane is excited to be chosen by our local State Farm® agent for the second month in a row as this month’s Quotes for Good organization. During the entire month of March, for every person we send their way and who completes an auto, fire, or life quote, they’ll make a $10 donation to our organization.

For the quote to qualify, the individual can be a new customer or a current State Farm customer that has policies with this agent. If the individual currently has policies with the agent, they will need to quote business they do not already have with the agent.

When calling in/stopping by for a quote, be sure to mention Quotes for Good and our organization’s name for the quote to qualify. We are excited about the opportunity to generate donations and create awareness about our cause. Thank you for supporting us through Quotes for Good. Together, we can make a difference in our community.

TOTES ADORBS: UPDATES FROM OUR FOREVER FAMILIES
Where Are They Now?
LIZA HAS BIG PLANS!
"Here is Liza playing in the snow! I hope you all are doing well and thank you so much for being amazing people. Liza is training to also become a service dog. Best wishes!"
ANGUS IS FULL OF MISCHIEF
"He is doing great, growing, jumping, sleeping under the bedcovers, sunbathing in windows, teasing the dog, clawing the furniture.... He likes playing soccer with anything he finds.  He is very handsome (even though he bites us occasionally!). Thanks for all your good work."
JOJO IS NEVER COMING BACK!
"We have officially decided that there is no way we could ever bring JoJo back to the shelter. He is doing amazingly well with us and seems to be extremely happy to finally be home. He is completely a different dog than the one we had first met. The fears he had the first day he got here are almost non-existent. We are working on training him how to touch things that scare him and it seems to be working. We could not have asked for a better addition to our family and so thankful to have him! We truly want to have him as a part of our family. We are also beyond grateful for all of your amazing volunteers and of the love and support our sweet boy received while in your care. They made a whole world’s of difference on how he was prepared to meet us and come home to his furever home. We worked with a few different shelters looking for our new fur baby, yours was by far one of the best!"
Adopt Me!
Meet Tyson!
Boxer mix Tyson is two-and-a-half years old, and he loves his walks! Before he leaves, he must stop by the bin of toys we have by the door and pick one out. He will dig through with his nose until he finds the BEST toy .

Tyson LOVES to run, so larger yards are a plus! He has lots of energy, and sometimes doesn't know his own strength, so we recommend no small children at home. He's lived with cats in the past, but we recommend he meet any doggy siblings before going home. Questions? Call us at (207) 449-1366.
