Honoring Elephants

To commemorate World Animal Day this year, EAI Founder and CEO Carol Buckley wrote a moving tribute to four elephants who touched her life profoundly with their strength of character and immeasurable contributions to animal conservation, despite the challenges forced upon them. Dipendra Gaj, Rup Kali, Kirti Kali and Sundar Mala spent more than five decades each supporting daily anti-poaching patrols in Nepal's Chitwan National Park. Their years of protecting wildlife is reason alone to hold them in the highest honor, but their legacy is their greatest gift.

These four elephants were the first to benefit from our Foot Care, Mahout (elephant keeper) Training, and EleCoat Programs, all of which we provide free of charge. Dipendra Gaj, Rup Kali, Kirti Kali and Sundar Mala helped validate these critical welfare projects in Nepal.

You can honor Sundar Mala and the memory of her fallen brethren by donating to our Winter EleCoats Campaign. Every donation - no matter the amount - makes a big difference.

Remembering Babana Chaudhary

Babana Chaudhary recently lost his life while cutting grass for his elephant Shanti Kali. Babana accidently surprised a tiger that was eating a recent kill, and the tiger attacked. Babana was a seasoned and caring mahout in Chitwan District, Nepal who would do anything for his elephant. The photo above is of Babhana, weeks earlier, picking up food provided by EAI for Shanti Kali. Our sincere condolences go to his family and friends.

EAI Executive Council Update

Incoming EAI Executive Council President Johnathan Nyquist (right) at Lucky 7 Tattoo for an EAI fundraiser.
We give a very warm and heartfelt thank you to outgoing EAI Executive Council President Debbie Emory-Utzig for more than 20 years of support, and countless hours of dedication. After 3 years as EC president, Debbie turns her focus to grant research, an important function of the council. Debbie hands the reigns over to Jonathan Nyquist, who at the age of 11, met Carol and embraced her vision. He has worked to improve elephant welfare ever since.
