GROWTH MINDSET GRADES
Thank you to all parents who were able to attend Tuesday morning's Parent Meeting on Growth Mindset. As discussed in the presentation, you can expect to see students' behavior grades replaced by two growth mindset grades- internal and external.  Here is the rubric  that students and teachers will use to assess students' approach to learning. SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION - INFO SESSION FOR PARENTS
TUESDAY, JANUARY 22, 7-8 PM
Alex Zemeckis, MA, SBMS alum and CEO/Founder of The Grounds Recovery Center, will provide insight on the social, emotional and physiological reasons teens and young adults use and abuse drugs and alcohol. As the founder of The Grounds, he's on the forefront of addiction and substance abuse in young adults. Bring your questions about vaping, drugs and alcohol use in young adults (and how to prevent it!).  Alex will be presenting to our 8th and 9th grade students during Life Skills class earlier in the day. HOMEWORK CLUB
Our after-school Homework Club meets most Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 - 5 pm. Homework assistance and tutoring is available. For more information email  Alex .

FOR RETURNING FAMILIES FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR
Please be aware of the following important dates:

  • Friday, Jan. 18, 2019: Financial Aid applications due for returning families. Note that complete applications are essential in order to be considered for receiving financial aid for the 2019-20 school year. Click HERE for instructions.
  • Wednesday, February 6, 2019: Enrollment Agreement packages mailed to returning families
  • Friday, February 22, 2019: Signed Enrollment Agreement and Deposit Due. Note that in order to hold your child's seat for next year, as well as financial aid awards, we must receive the signed agreement and deposit by the due date.

Note to current 8th grade families : We understand that you may be applying to private high schools and/or the academies at public high schools. Many of these schools/academies will be sending acceptances in early February with contracts due around Feb. 14. In order for us to hold your place - and any possible financial aid awards - please complete our Enrollment Contracts with deposit (and Financial Aid applications) according to the above schedule and deadlines. This allows us to secure your space for next year. We will refund deposits if your child decides to attend one of the private schools or academies to which they have applied for 9th grade. SBMS Enrollment Contracts and acceptance of financial aid awards need to be submitted to us by Feb. 22.

The SBMS Spring Dinner & Auction is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year and a wonderful community celebration! This year's Auction will be held May 18, 2019 at the Santa Barbara Carriage Museum. Want to find out this year's theme and join in the fun? Please stop by our upcoming  Auction Open House !

CURRY BAR
It is Curry Bar this month! Salad is great but sometimes a little change can be great too. The Curry Bar is the same price but with crazy flavors. Hot rice made every day with the option of three different curries and a medley of toppings and yogurt sauces to make an epic meal. At a price of $3.50, it's a deal. Let's encourage the exploration of new flavors and have the students tasting seasonings like garam masala spice or thai basil coconut green curry.

PARENT WORKSHOP: Navigating the digital & gaming age with our youth
Sunday, January 27, 2019, 3-5:15 pm at Deckers (6601 Hollister Ave )
Free parent workshop will feature 2 speakers and breakout groups where you will learn strategies on how to support youth responsibly with their devices. Understand the impact of screens on brain development. Learn to identify signs of cell phone and gaming addiction. Learn how to start the conversations with your child and set healthy limits around devices. RSVP here.

AHA! AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM SPRING 2019 FOR 9TH GRADE STUDENTS
AHA! is enrolling for their AHA! (Attitude, Harmony, Achievement) after-school groups. This opportunity is specific to 9th grade students. AHA!'s mission is to provide a space for teens to feel safe, seen, and celebrated. Our after-school groups are the most direct avenue to this goal. 

They have openings in all of our groups and students can receive ample community service hours, leadership skills, and social-emotional learning.
