Dear Colleagues:

I used to get progress updates on our new facility from the construction manager who oversees the project. But that changed a couple of months ago when some of the finishing touches began to appear on the exterior of our Postle Hall expansion. Since then I have been getting regular progress reports from students, staff, and faculty throughout the college.

The first of such reports related to the brick work that is being completed and the special patterns the masons are using to set the bricks. One person pointed out the herringbone pattern between the window casings on the southwest side of the building. Another commented on the brick arrangement at the top of the east side. Both were impressed with all that is being accomplished and the skills of those who are working on the project.

Not long after that, a second-year dental student stopped me on the sidewalk, pointed to the building, and said, "Look, they have some of the windows in!" She sounded so excited and had such a big smile on her face that it made me smile, too, as I continued walking.

Then on Monday, I received a text message from a senior staff member who let me know the new lettering had just been mounted on the building. He included a photo that showed exactly what I had been waiting for -- large, stainless steel letters that spell out "College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics." It is there for everyone driving west on 11th Avenue to see and for everyone on campus to notice!

These members of our college community, and many others who work off campus, have shared with me the progress they have seen on our new building. They have also let me know how pleased they are about this project and the impact it will have on the future of our college. All this tells me we have reached a turning point.

We have gone from being just another new construction project at Ohio State to something that people feel connected to, take ownership of, and are already proud about. I was told we would someday arrive at this special place and time. How gratifying it is to be here!

Justin Kaspar, PhD, Joins College Faculty

Dr. Justin Kaspar will join the college faculty on July 1st as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Biosciences. He earned a B.S. degree in microbiology from Texas A&M University, after which he completed a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences in the College of Medicine at the University of Florida.

He has since served as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Oral Biology at the University of Florida College of Dentistry, where he has conducted research funded by grants from the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Dr. Kaspar's projects have investigated bacterial communication in the caries-causing microbe Streptococcus mutans and the pathogen's ability to survive and persist. His current research examines new mechanisms by which oral bacteria "fight back" against their disease-causing rivals. With NIDCR funding pending, his work is aimed at determining new pathways that could serve as targets for therapeutic interventions that selectively remove pathogens like S. mutans from the oral cavity, while keeping the normal, healthy microbiome intact.

As a faculty member, Dr. Kaspar will conduct research and contribute to the didactic teaching responsibilities of the Division of Biosciences. He will also support curriculum development to ensure the highest quality of educational experiences for pre-doctoral students.
