Powdercoating That Will Blow You Away!

Back in 2016, Aaron Gallinger stopped by our booth at SEMA and purchased the Stripe-It-All Tool.  Almost two years later in August 2018, Aaron sent some pics.  Rob and Ryan  also looked at a bunch of his instagram pics.  Really spectacular stuff!  This caused us to come up with all kinds of questions and Aaron graciously enlightened us with  a bunch of details.   Get ready to be Blown Away!

So, we pass along the Q&A interaction.

Q:  What car is that?

A:  It's a 2017 Tesla P90D

Q:  What wheels are those?

A:  Arachnid 21" Wheels

Q:  Tell us how you did that because we have never seen such attention to detail and spectacular results.

A:  Powder coated red first, custom masked and striped to conceal the red, then powder coated black, masking removed to reveal the red, then clear powder coated to achieve ultimate durability, UV resistance and a show quality high gloss finish. I even masked his name in tesla font into the barrel of the wheel :-) (see last pic) thanks for making such an easy to use tool. I may need some more of the little wheels with the felt on them :-)

Q:  Are you using a special hi-temp mask material?

A:   Yes I do use high temp masking in some cases but these wheels were not one of them.

Q:  Do you use a vinyl cutter to cut your mask shapes for the spokes and rimstripes?

A:   Yes I did use a combination of hand cut masking, some of my own secret sauce, photoshop and a vinyl plotter with basic vectorizing software to get the masking shapes. Then used your stripe it all tool to finish it off.

Q:  How long did this take and what did it cost?

A:  After the wheel was masked it was then powder coated black and baked to a partial cure and removed from the oven, allowed to cool slightly and then the masking had to be removed pretty quickly before the powder fully solidified. The stripe around the edge and all the shapes and the customers name all had to be peeled off to reveal the red. Then the wheel was put back in the oven to fully cure the black. This took place each day until all 4 Wheels were coated and then they were touched up if needed again with a secret process :-) then the set was cleared with a very high gloss "superdurable" clear powder top coat.

This job probably took around 20 hours and the customer paid $1200, but I may raise my prices on the next set.

I hope you enjoy, because I had a hard time letting these go back to the Customer.

As always, Tapeworks welcomes your photos of your bike or car! Just a couple things - please tell us what your vehicle is and what you put on it, and send a few high-resolution photos of closeups as well as wide shots of the whole vehicle to [email protected].

Also, if any of you have installed reflective rimstripes, we'd love to get some day and night shots to add to the gallery and on the product pages.  To get good night shots, position the vehicle on a dark street, stand far back from the vehicle, and use flash.  They can be hard to photograph so try several different distances and be sure to brace the camera against something fixed so you get a sharp picture.

And if you've got some sort of testimonial, send it on over, whether it's good or bad!
