The Alliance Working in Kentucky: Sasakawa USA hosts fourth installment of TAWA series

Sasakawa USA will underline the importance of the U.S.-Japan relationship by taking a delegation of experts from Washington, DC, to Kentucky from March 5-7 as part of its fourth installment of The Alliance Working in America (TAWA) seriesAs on previous TAWA programs, Sasakawa USA is partnering with local universities, businesses, non-profit, and Japan-related organizations for events and activities.

On March 6, Sasakawa USA will co-host a public panel discussion, " The U.S.-Japan Alliance Working in Kentucky," in Louisville with the  World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana and the  World Affairs Councils of America in partnership with the  East-West Center in Washington and  Japan-America Society of Kentucky On March 7,  Sasakawa USA will co-host " Japan-Kentucky Collaboration: Developing the Bluegrass Workforce and Economy" in Lexington with  the  Consulate-General of Japan in Nashville and other organizations. Additional private events are also planned.

Celebrating U.S.-Japan friendship as symbolized by Japan's gift of cherry blossom trees, Sasakawa USA will present an innovative public discussion in Washington, DC, on April 2. "U.S.-Japan Leadership and Collaboration in Emerging Technologieswill feature a panel of Silicon Valley experts discussing technology trends in the United States and Japan with a focus on technologies surrounding autonomous vehicles. 

The event will be held as part of the 2019 National Cherry Blossom Festival and will take place in the Mayflower Hotel's District Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public. Space is limited and advanced registration is required.

Event Recap: U.S.-Japan Town Hall: Trends in People-to-People Exchanges and Educational Initiatives


On January 29, Sasakawa USA and the U.S. Japan Exchange & Teaching Programme Alumni Association (USJETAA) co-hosted an inaugural hybrid U.S.-Japan town hall, with in-person and virtual attendees. This event, " U.S.-Japan Town Hall: Trends in People-to-People Exchanges and Educational Initiatives" was held at Florida International University in Washington, DC. 

Dr. Sheila Smith, Senior Fellow for Japan Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, and James Gannon, Executive Director of the Japan Center for International Exchange, discussed trends in people-to-people exchange between the United States in Japan.  View a  recording of the event .

Event Recap: China's Strategic Perception of Japan: The View from Beijing

Yun Sun, Co-Director of the East Asia Program and Director of the China Program at the Stimson Center, was the guest speaker at Sasakawa USA's February 6 Policy Lunch Series discussion on "China's Strategic Perception of Japan: The View from Beijing." The off-the-record discussion was moderated by Sasakawa USA Research Assistant Darah Phillip

In her comments, Sun noted the complexities of Sino-Japanese relations, highlighting historical issues, the U.S.-Japan alliance, and other factors that have defined relations between Japan and China.


Event Recap: Security Threats in the Western Pacific: A Former III MEF Commander's Perspective


On February 13, Sasakawa USA hosted LtGen Lawrence Nicholson (USMC, ret.), former Commander of the III Marine Expeditionary Force (2015-2018), for a Policy Lunch Series event on "Security Threats in the Western Pacific: A Former III MEF Commander's Perspective." Nicholson's talk focused on emerging regional threats that have shaped the development of U.S.-Japan cooperation in security and defense. Chris Rodeman, Research Fellow at Sasakawa USA, moderated the discussion.
