Hijos del Sol by David Ocelotl García

Dear LCAC community,
I want to start off by thanking all of you who contributed to our end-of-year campaign in 2019—
with your support we raised over $10,000 in two-months, with an additional $3,800 pledged in recurring donations throughout 2020.
The year is off to an exciting start! We are well into our
listening tour
, which is
informing the design of our original programming
by helping us
identify the creative needs and priorities of our community.
To date, we have interviewed approximately 30 artists and will be transitioning to the next phase which involves connecting with local families, youth and scholars. In the coming months we will share some of our findings so stay tuned!
Finally, I want to take a moment to introduce you to
Joyce Sanchez
, who is supporting the LCAC as a part-time
Programs Coordinator
after volunteering with us for over a year. Joyce brings decades of experience working with families and youth. Not only is she incredibly bright and determined, she has a great sense of humor—please join me in welcoming her to the team!
See you at the next Hijos del Sol shopping event—
Celebrando a la Mujer—where 15% of all sales will be donated to Tsobol Antzetik (meaning Women United in Tzotzil)
, a weaving co-op of Maya women in Chiapas that uses textile weaving to support their families and communities.
As always, my door is open and if you would like to schedule a time to brainstorm with me, please feel free to reach out!
Sincerely,
Alfredo

Cementing the Contributions of Chicana Muralist Carlota EspinoZa
Denver's place in
Chicano/a Art
|
At LCAC, part of our responsibility as
stewards of Latinx art & culture
is to make sure that we play an integral role in championing the
visibility of artists of color.
During our recent cafecito with
Carlota EspinoZa, a native Coloradan and pioneer of Chicana muralism,
we looked through her archive that encapsulated over 60 years of work. EspinoZa’s contributions to the Colorado arts landscape cemented Latinas within the historical fabric of American society.

“How quickly we forget where we come from. So remind me, remind me that I come from the Taínos of the río, the Aztec, the Mayan, Los Incas, los Españoles con sus fincas buscando oro, and the Yoruba Africanos que con sus manos built a mundo nunca imaginado
