Howdy Neighbors,

Thank you to everyone who came out to the District 10 Community Meeting on Monday. We learned about the mission of Soldiers' Angels from their Vice President of Development, Dr. Jennifer Cernoch.  The City of San Antonio's Neighborhood Engagement Officer, Erika Ragsdale presented on the neighborhood association registration process. Chief Pat Zepeda from the Office of Emergency Management briefed us on the different types of emergency notifications offered by the Office of Emergency Management. Andres Andujan, the CEO of Hemisfair, invited District 10 neighbors to come out and experience all of what Hemisfair has to offer.

As a reminder, District 10 hosts a Community Meeting on the third Monday of every even month, unless otherwise stated. The Northeast Neighborhood Alliance hosts meetings on the third Monday of every odd month, unless otherwise stated.

Early voting begins next week on Monday, October 22nd and ends on Friday, November 2nd. The election will take place on November 6th. If you have any questions about the three propositions on the ballot, please visit the City's website. Check your county election website for voting information and polling locations.

SAWS's drought restrictions have been lifted. Watering with an irrigation system is permitted any day of the week before 11 am or after 7 pm. Hand watering with a hand-held hose, drip irrigation, soaker hose or bucket is permitted any time of day.

The temperature has dropped, and I want to encourage you all to stay warm and safe as we enter fall and winter.  Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths. The San Antonio Fire Department reminds you that with a few simple safety tips and precautions you can prevent most heating fires from happening. Test smoke alarms at least once a month. Install and maintain CO (carbon monoxide) alarms to avoid the risk of CO poisoning. Keep anything that can burn at least three-feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or portable space heater. Never use your oven to heat your home. Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional. Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

As always, thank you for being active community members and leaders here in District 10, and do not hesitate to contact our office if we can be of any assistance to you.

- Clayton

My Thoughts: The Alamo Master Plan

"Many San Antonians have called, emailed, and attended Council meetings to ask their district's representative one burning question: What is City Council going to do about the Alamo?
At this point, all that remains for Council to weigh in on are street closures and land leases. A May 2017 vote on the conceptual Alamo plan, which included only four current Council members, laid the path forward for several items in the current proposed Alamo plan, including the relocation and repair of the Cenotaph.
While most San Antonians agree the Shrine of Texas Liberty should be protected and enhanced for all to enjoy for years to come, many of us - including myself - remain unconvinced the proposed changes to the Alamo are warranted and necessary."
This excerpt is from an editorial I recently wrote for the Rivard Report, to read the rest of my thoughts regarding the Alamo, click  here.

 Vulcan Quarry Crusher Run

Vulcan Materials Company is opening the doors to its 1604 Quarry Saturday, October 20 for the Second Annual Quarry Crusher Adventure Run in San Antonio. The 3.1 or 6.2 mile race (single or double crusher respectively), which is not for the faint of heart, begins at the top of the quarry and challenges participants run or walk all the way down to the bottom, before climbing back out at a steep 8 percent grade.

The race once benefits Soldiers' Angels, a San Antonio-based organization that works nationally to provide aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, their families, as well as the growing veteran population. In 2017 alone, Soldiers' Angels provided $17 million-plus in aid to over 360,000 active service members, veterans, wounded heroes and military families. Last year's Quarry Crusher Run netted more than $12,000 for the organization.

Although the Quarry Crusher Run is much more physically demanding than a prototypical road race, those of all athletic skill levels are encouraged to participate.
