Spotlight on our Schools - Lakeview

Once again this year, Lakeview is participating in the One School One Book program.  To connect with our "Math Matters" goals, this year's book, Lunch Money by Andrew Clements, was selected by the teachers.  To add to the excitement of learning about economics through the eyes of young entrepreneurs, students are also listening to each chapter being read by a mystery reader.  Each week, students discuss the chapter shared and see if they can identify the Lakeview reader. It creates quite a stir around the building each week!

In addition to our OSOB program beginning this month, we also had a very special visit from the Cat in the Hat!  Thanks to the NJEA, our pre-school thru second graders had a surprise experience listening to some of our 5th graders read the Dr. Seuss story as our own Lakeview Lion and the Cat in the Hat acted it out for their enjoyment.  It was a great way to prepare for our upcoming Read Across America Day on Monday, March 2.
To honor Dr. Seuss' birthday and promote reading as a lifelong skill, Lakeview has planned to have many special visitors help us celebrate this day!  All students will take a "Reader's Oath" to promise to make reading an important part of everyday. Throughout the day, many guest readers are invited to share stories with the students.  Family members, friends, retired educators, administrators, coaches, and community members will be coming to Lakeview to be a part of the day. To end the day's events, the entire building, will drop everything to "Sit for Seuss" and share in a few moments of silent reading.
Lakeview strives towards making our students better citizens and leaders throughout our schools and community.  Our Safety Patrol program focus on building different skills that not only provide our school with a better sense of community, but also a safer environment allowing for opportunities of nurture and growth for our student body.
We recently said goodbye to our Fall Safety Patrol members and inducted a new group into our spring session.  While we are saddened to see our fall safety patrol tenure expire, we are comforted knowing that the skills acquired during their time are ones that can be used in years to come.  We look forward to seeing our Spring Safety Patrol develop the same skills and grow into the amazing citizens that define our school and the values it stands for.
L.E.A.D. Graduation was held on February, 28th.  This program empowers our children to make good decisions.  I am sure their teachers, school counselors and you, their parents have discussed many of the topics covered in this program.  The effectiveness of this program is its delivery from a police officer who connects with the children and who is personally vested in each and every one of them. Thank you, Officer Underwood!!! The students wrote essays as the culminating activity and one student from each class was asked to read their essay at the graduation.  We clearly have exceptional writers at Lakeview School which made this a very difficult decision. The following students shared their essays: Gerard DiGuglielmo, Benjamin Picache, Matthew Wever, Claire Wang, Lila Parrish. Amazing!
