Online Safety Resources for Parents
Over the past couple of days there have been several discussions about social media and online safety, especially in light of recent news reports about the MoMo Challenge, in which children are reportedly being urged to perform a series of dangerous tasks, including violent attacks and suicide, in order to avoid a curse. Fortnight, PewDiePie videos, and overall online supervision also have raised concerns. Protect Young Eyes ( https://protectyoungeyes.com/) can be a valuable resource for parents, and this article has some relevant recommendations about online safety: https://www.jeffveley.com/2017/04/04/jeff-veley-talks-cyberbullying-and-online-safety/.

Clara Bello (G4) earned a gold medal for her trumpet solo and Michael Junitz (G5) earned a silver for his saxophone solo. Both played the piece, Sawmill Creek , one of two pieces beginning students could choose for the competition. Clara and Michael are both band program beginners and this was their first solo contest. Congratulations to these outstanding young musicians!

Children's Choir (K-7) Restart
Thu., Mar. 7, 6-6:45 PM in the Music Room
Our Children’s Choir restarts this week following an extended break after the holidays. Why might you consider vocal music for your child?

Experts agree that music is an important part of life. There is good neuroscience research that children involved in music have improved neural activity and regular singers are found to have lower levels of cortisol, indicating lower levels of stress. 1

Endorphins and oxytocin, hormones released during singing, provide a sense of pleasure and alleviate anxiety and stress. 1 Oxytocin also enhances feelings of trust and bonding, which may explain why studies have found that singing decreases feelings of depression and loneliness. 1

Children taking music lessons tested on average three IQ points higher than other groups. Music can improve children’s abilities in learning and other non-music tasks 2  and research has found a causal link between music and spatial intelligence. This means that understanding music can help children visualize elements that should go together, as when solving a math problem. 2

Finally, students involved in music education programs scored roughly 22 percent higher in English and 20 percent higher in math scores on standardized tests. 2

Ash Wednesday is Next Week
Wed., Mar. 6, Ash Wednesday services at 2 and 7 PM, in the sanctuary
“Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent, a time of reflection on the depth of God's love revealed in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. It is a time to reflect on how we have or have not responded to that love, to turn away from those aspects of our lives that are unworthy of us as Christians, and to turn toward God. It is about the mystery of our salvation in Christ in preparation for the celebration of His resurrection. “ Scott Snider at quora.com.

Immanuel assists our efforts to turn toward God through weekend worship services that will revisit and explore the parables Jesus shared with his disciples in an effort to prepare them for what was to come and by exploring the concept of prayer at midweek messages. Midweek services are scheduled for Weds., Mar. 6-Apr. 10 at 2 and 7 PM in the sanctuary.
