New Bedford, Massachusetts’ Union Street Project:
A Centerpiece of a Great American Downtown
A central corridor in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Union Street has long illustrated the historic story of this beautiful city. As part of the city’s overall revitalization efforts, CDM Smith is partnering with the city to rehabilitate this important corridor. Phase 1 was recently completed, and phase 2 will begin in early 2021. Encompassing sustainable streetscape features such as rain gardens, historic copperhead streetlights, and important ADA safety elements, Union Street is a great example of how a sense of place, purpose, and sustained livability can be achieved, while maintaining the historic integrity that defines New England and Massachusetts... Historic New England Infrastructure: The Canton Viaduct
If you’re a railroad enthusiast or interested in iconic New England infrastructure, you’re likely familiar with the Canton Viaduct, also referred to by locals as the “Great Wall of Canton”. Constructed between 1834 and 1835 and designed by Chief Engineer William Gibbs McNeill and George Washington Whistler, the viaduct is believed to be the second oldest multiple-arch masonry viaduct in the U.S. Originally constructed for the Boston and Providence Railroad (B & P), today, the structure supports Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Providence/Stoughton commuter rail line...Read more

MassDOT Replaces Critical Bridge in Weekend Project
The bridge that carries state routes 4 and 225 over the Shawsheen River in Bedford was found by MassDOT to be in serious need of work. At the same time, it is a primary corridor for east-west traffic between Bedford and Lexington. The solution was to schedule principal bridge rehabilitation over the course of a weekend in October so that the new bridge would be operational for Monday morning traffic...Read more
