CASP Support Helps One Child to Better Cope with his Grief

After his father was killed by sniper fire in the Four-Day War of April 2016, 10-year-old Rafayel Danielyan could not cope. "Rafayel was traumatized. He isolated himself from family and peers, and wouldn't talk to anyone for a while," said his grandma, Nona.

After his father was killed, Rafayel's mother Lusine was left on her own to figure out a way to support her children. What helped Lusine and her children was the Children of Armenia Sponsorship Program (CASP), which, through the generous support from the Knights of Vartan, extended additional financial aid to children who had lost their fathers in the Four-Day War. Since 2017, 18 children from Artsakh and 44 children from Armenia have received this aid, which totals $250 per child, annually. CASP also supports 550 other children with stipends throughout Armenia and Javakhk. To read more, go to LINK

Great Lent Begins in March

This year, the Armenian Church calendar designates Monday, March 4, as the first day of Great Lent: the season when Christians consciously turn away from worldly matters and make the effort through prayer, fasting, study, and introspection to prepare for the spiritual drama of Holy Week and Easter Sunday.

The Scriptural basis for Lent resides in the 40-day period Christ spent in the wilderness following his baptism. In the words of St. Matthew's Gospel (4:12): "Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry."

During Lent we are called to follow the Holy Spirit to confront our own "inner wilderness", the realm of spiritual emptiness engendered by sin, laziness, and vanity. Through prayer, fasting, Bible-reading, and self-examination, we are given an opportunity to renew our commitment to God, and gain the strength to work at being more loving, humble, and gentle.  Click here to learn more about the Armenian Church traditions concerning Great Lent.

On February 23rd, the ACYOA Juniors youth group enjoyed a day trip to Liberty Mountain in Pennsylvania. A group of teens, and a few of the brave chaperons, donned their snow pants and slid down the hill at the Snow Tubing center! Afterwards they had lunch and time of fellowship.
Special thanks goes out to Catherine Sahakian for organizing the event.

"Leading to Easter: Searching the Soul"

Please join us Wednesdays during Lent for prayer service, spiritual discussion, and dinner.
This year we will journey through Lent meditating on the last three chapters of the Gospel of Matthew.
The season of Lent is a season for searching the soul. As you study Matthew 26-28, you will search your own soul through the lenses of the people closest to Jesus in His last hours. The last three chapters of Matthew are a juxtaposition of stories.
Throughout our journey we will address Communion, Jesus' deserters, His submission to the Father, and His crucifixion. While the theme of rejection runs through these chapters in Matthew, there is good news: joy of the resurrection that you can experience with new eyes.

DIOCESAN AND OTHER NEWS

Science Education for Rural Armenia

Teachers in Armenia's rural districts often have trouble keeping up with the kind of training and resources that can inspire students to pursue the sciences.

But thanks to a Fund for Armenian Relief initiative, six school science labs have been refurbished in Armenia's Berd region. The labs-renovated as part of FAR's Breaking the Cycle of Poverty program-will allow students in the impoverished border region to advance beyond textbook learning to practical, hands-on experimentation.

In addition to providing new equipment for physics, chemistry, and biology classes, FAR also arranged training for local science teachers in the respective disciplines.

"Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. "Thus when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by men.  Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.  But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.  "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by men.  Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.  But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you. "And in praying do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their many words.  Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.  Pray then like this: Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.  Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors; And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.  For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men.  Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.  But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.  "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where month and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither month nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."
Matthew 6:1-21
