Meet SPCA NOVA partner Lisa Reid of Ragged Mountain Dogs Rescue
The SPCA of Northern Virginia works with many wonderful partners, volunteers, and supporters who together enable us to carry out our mission. One partner in particular, Lisa Reid of Ragged Mountain Dogs, stands out because of her daily commitment and devotion to watching over the dogs of the SPCA and preparing them for adoption at her facilities on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains in VA.
Lisa Reid is the manager and owner of Ragged Mountain Dogs (RMD), where the SPCA's dogs are housed while waiting for adoption. Lisa was first introduced to the SPCA in 2000 while working at a dog training facility in Haymarket. A couple of years later, when we needed a new location to house our dogs, we approached Lisa to learn if she might be interested in keeping the dogs in her care until they were adopted. She accepted the offer and created the facilities necessary to establish an environment that would cater to the emotional and behavioral needs of all the animals in her care.

Separating Fact from Fiction:
Cats and Toxoplasmosis
 We often see news publications print articles about toxoplasmosis that not only cause widespread fear, but also spread sweeping misinformation: "'Cat Lady' Parasite Linked to Permanent Brain Damage" (ABC News), "How Your Cat Is Making You Crazy" (The Atlantic), "Cat Poop Parasite Is Dangerously Widespread" (Live Science), to name just a few. These inaccurate and overstated headlines can have devastating consequences, leaving untold numbers of cats homeless when their guardians begin planning families. We would like to separate fact from fiction surrounding this issue and invite you to explore this issue further.

 SPCA NOVA Supporters Make #GivingTuesday a Day to Remember
This year, SPCA NOVA decided to launch a #GivingTuesday campaign to help raise funds to expand the number of cats and dogs with which we could work in 2015. We had an ambitious goal-to raise $15,000 online in 24 hours. And, thanks to our amazing supporters, WE DID IT!! During the 24 hours of December 2, 2014, we were able to raise $15,894 from 124 generous donors. We had help from an anonymous donor, who sponsored a "yappy hour" from 5:00-7:00pm and gave us $25 for each donation received in that period, but the most important factor in our success was the many SPCA NOVA supporters that shared our campaign messaging through email and social media and encouraged friends and family members to donate. Thank you from the dogs and cats in our care and the volunteers who make this organization run smoothly for the role you played in our GivingTuesday success!

Every good dog deserves a Biscuit! Two-year old BISCUIT, aka "Mr. Personality," is looking for a new foster or forever home with a like-minded FIV-positive cat or dog to become his best buddy. This friendly, very active boy keeps his foster mom in stitches with his silly, playful antics. Although
diagnosed FIV-positive, Biscuit remains healthy and active and is almost always in the mood to rough-house or chase a laser pointer. Biscuit is expected to live a long, healthy life with proactive veterinary care and yearly checkups.
