Market Gardener Class 2019
 
Classes meet four Saturdays in March and April 2019 for four hours 
March 9 & 23, and April 6 & 20, 2018, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

In this four- day intensive course, you will learn how to take the step from gardener to growing for market. Our classroom will be in the field, where we will grow four different crops, harvest and prepare to sell.

CFSA and NC Cooperative Extension have partnered to deliver a workshop that will provide an overview of the process required to successfully go through a USDA Harmonized GAP audit. During this workshop we will provide attendees with the resources to build your food safety plan.

4-H Summer Camp
July 7-12
Millstone 4-H Camp, Ellerbee
Ages 8-14

Cooperative Extension is now accepting registration for youth to attend Millstone 4-H overnight summer camp. It is not necessary to be a 4-H member to attend. The camp offers traditional camp activities, like shooting sports, canoeing, ropes course, horseback riding, hiking, and more outdoor activities. Catawba County will travel and attend camp together as a county group. Amanda Knight, 4-H Livestock Club leader will be with the group at camp, in addition to trained camp staff.

The cost for camp is $435 with a $200 deposit due at the time of registration. Scholarships are available.

We are fortunate to be able to offer Kiwanis camp scholarships to help with the cost of attending camp. The scholarships are provided by Hickory Kiwanis Club and this marks the 20th year they have provided 4-H camp scholarships!

Spring Plant Sale & Gardening Workshop
Monday, March 4

Demonstration Garden

Cooperative Extension will be offering a spring planting workshop as a component of their Annual 4-H Small Fruit Plant sale. The special workshop is for individuals who have purchased or plan to purchase plants offered with the 4-H spring plant sale. During the workshop, Dr. George Place, Extension Director, will discuss how to prepare your area and care for plants that are available for purchase which includes strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and asparagus. Individuals will have the chance to see some of these plants in the demonstration garden at the Ag Center. Pre-registration for the workshop is not needed.

To place an order for plants, come by the Agricultural Resources Center, 1175 South Brady Ave., in Newton or order online. You may also call Cooperative Extension at 828-465-8240 to request an order form or email [email protected]. Pre-payment is required. Orders will also be accepted at the Monday afternoon workshops. Orders are accepted until March 6 and plants will be available for pick-up in mid-March from the Ag. Center.
Proceeds from the sale will be used to support 4-H activities for youth in Catawba County.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

    


Auxin Herbicide Training is required for all persons planning to apply dicamba (Engenia, FeXapan, or XtendiMax) to Xtend cotton or soybeans or 2,4-D (Enlist Duo or Enlist One) to Enlist cotton or soybeans. Take a look at the full schedule of training sessions around the state. 1 CEU for pesticide licenses N, D, O, X will also be given.

Soybean growers have a new tool from the Official Variety Testing (OVT) that takes place throughout NC. Take a look at this variety selector tool.

Are you interested in growing Industrial Hemp?  We are scheduling a meeting with MVP processing in Mooresville in mid March.  This will be a meeting at the extension office to understand how the processor is working with farmers in regards to biomass testing, biomass quality parameters that they need, prices, and to answer questions that our farmers have. This meeting is for farmers, not the general public so contact George - 828-465-8247 if you are interested.
