Faculty/staff collect toilet paper for St. Elizabeth
When people donate to agencies like St. Elizabeth Catholic Charities, which has a residency program for mothers and their children, they don't often think of the necessities needed to keep such shelters operational, simple things like toilet paper many of us take for granted.

Mrs. Karen (Popp) Schueler '83, coordinator of learning differences, is a board member for St. Elizabeth and heard of the agency's need for toilet paper for its residents. So she rallied her fellow faculty and staff and challenged them to fill a truck full of toilet paper to donate to the shelter. They met the challenge and delivered 1,000 rolls of toilet paper for the St. Elizabeth residents.
School News: Rising Stars, House activities
Juniors named IASP Rising Stars
Four juniors have been named to the Rising Stars of Indiana Class of 2020 by the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP). Zoe Libs, Maria Popson, Brynna Walthers, and Brigid Welch
were nominated based on their academic rank. They each received a congratulatory letter from Rep. Trey Hollingsworth. Read more for a Q&A.

WaterStep collection nearly double last year's
The House of Loyalty recently sponsored its annual collection of used shoes to benefit WaterStep, a nonprofit organization that sells the shoes to an exporter and then uses the funds received to help install safe drinking water projects all over the world. Any used soccer cleats were donated to Amigos De Jesus, an orphanage in Honduras.

The House of Loyalty donated the most shoes at 154, with Integrity in second at 87, and Truth in third at 70. Overall, the collection was one pair shy of doubling last year's 258 pairs.
House of Faith profile: Leaders make a good team
Seniors Megan Flanagan and Alex Henderson
are used to working together as co-delegates for the House of Faith. Since sophomore year, the two have been sharing the delegate role and find it works well. Now as senior executive delegates, they have the chance to plan activities and motivate their House to get involved. Read more.

STEM Career Fair draws 30 vendors
The fourth annual STEM Career Expo was a success. Thirty vendors from employers and colleges throughout the region were available to talk with students about career opportunities in science, math, technology and engineering. Providence students visited during fourth block, and Deanery students and STEM Club students visited after school. We thank all the representatives of the companies, schools, and organizations who took part in the event, including many PHS alumni.

Freaky Friday is comedy for all ages
"You just don't understand!" is a common statement teenagers say to their parents - and vice versa. Freaky Friday the Musical by Disney gives one rebellious teenage girl and her stressed-out mom the chance to understand what the other is going through when they accidentally switch bodies for a day.  Read more.

The musical, which opens Friday in the Robinson Auditorium, is a comedy that shows how Katherine and her daughter Ellie cope with the switch. Premiere Night is Friday with a pre-show reception at 6:30 p.m. in the Koetter Gym and the show at 7:30. The opening night show and reception is $40.

All other shows are $15. Tickets for students through grade eight are $10 and are available only by phone or in person. On March 2, March 8, and March 9, the show starts at 7:00 p.m. On March 3 and March 10, the show starts at 2:00 p.m.

Sports News: Postseason news for winter sports
Boys Swim has decade-high score at sectional

Pioneer Swim and Dive team wrapped up another very successful season. At season's end, we had 31 members on the team, continuing our four-year trend of increasing participation in this sport, with many who were completely new to the sport until high school.
Diver junior Nadia Brooks, in her first year, advanced out of state sectionals and had the opportunity to compete and represent Providence in the state regional. For the boys, senior Tanner Carver set the school record in the 1 meter 6 dive event with a high score of 229.05.
Though we do not keep score totals year over year, we had four-year high scores in total points end in a virtual tie between juniors Lauren Stapp and Meg LaMaster, and on the guys' side, freshman Zach Applewhite scored more points than probably anyone in the past 15 years. The boys' team swam particularly strong with six guys scoring more points this year than our points leader last year.

In the boys' sectional, we finished with a 10-year high in points with 118 and a seventh place finish out of 16 teams. We finished just behind New Albany, and we were ahead of all the Mid South Conference schools. All three of our men's relay teams swam in the sectional championship heat for the first time in many years, and sophomore Kieran Kelly swam in the consolation heat in the 100 breaststroke. All three of our girls' relay teams did well too, and all made the consolation heat. The only schools to beat the Providence Swim and Dive team this year came from the much larger Hoosier Hills Conference schools.

We graduate some amazing team members in Tanner and his fellow seniors Thomas Gaines, Abby Glotzbach, Daryl Hunton, Bryce Drury, Harry Green, Sam LaMaster and Tyler Upton. However, with a strong contingent of underclassmen, the future looks bright for the 2019-2020 season.

Boys Basketball starts sectional play tonight
The Boys Basketball team faces Clarksville tonight at 6:00 in the Crawford County Sectional. The semi-final game is Friday at 7:30 p.m., and the finals are Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $6 per session and available at the door.

Parent Notes: STEM Career Expo, ISTEP rally
Save the date: Senior/Mother Lunch
The Senior/Mother Lunch is Sunday, April 7, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Calumet Club in New Albany. This special event is a time for mothers and their senior students to enjoy before the business of the end of the school year. All seniors and their mothers or special person in their life are invited to attend. Formal invitations have been mailed, and RSVPs are due by March 15.

Scholarship opportunities for incoming freshmen
Incoming Providence freshmen can apply for two scholarships:
  • Providence Alumni Association Award: The Providence Alumni Association Scholarship is a one-time award of a 64 GB iPad Pro 10.7 equipped with wi-fi only. The scholarship application is open to all prospective freshmen, and the award is based on a combination of: desire to attend Providence, academic/school-civic involvement, and financial need. Application, essay, and letter of recommendation from either principal or teacher is required. Due March 13, 2019.
  • Dale Durham Performing Arts Scholarship: The Dale Durham Performing Arts Scholarship is a performing arts award honoring former theater director and faculty member Dale Durham. It is a $1,000 award made to an eighth-grade student admitted to Providence and enrolled in at least one semester of performing arts his/her freshman year. Essay, letter of recommendations, and application required. Due March 15, 2019. 
Reserve dates for snow make-up days
The first week of Spring Break, March 18-22, and Oaks Day, May 3, are reserved for snow make-up days, should they be needed. Please do not schedule vacations during these times.
ALUMNI NOTES
PHS cafeteria provides cake for alumni wedding
When Kara Garcia '11 and Weston Spalding '13 were planning their November 2018 wedding, they wanted a supplement cake, and their favorite cake came to mind -- the blueberry cake served in the PHS cafeteria. Kara called cafeteria manager Mrs. Karen Hennessey and requested the cake, and Mrs. Hennessey was happy to help. 

"It was special since we met each other at summer tennis for Providence," Kara said.
Alumni Night a success
Thank you to everyone who came to Alumni Night on Saturday, Feb. 23. We had more than 50 alumni attend, representing 31 classes from 1956 to 2016. The Class of 1986 had the most with six alumni. It was good to see everyone and congratulations to those who won PHS swag.

Medical mission trips a driving force for '07 grad
Elizabeth Ansert '07 is in her last semester at the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in Miami Shores, Fla., but she already has experience providing medical care to those who need it most. She has participated in two medical mission trips to the Dominican Republic, and she is planning two upcoming trips, one to Guyana in South America and one to Uganda in Africa. To help others experience serving the most needy on medical mission trips, she was co-founder of an annual fundraiser that offers scholarships to college students wanting to go. Her efforts earned her the Student Medical Missionary of the Year award from Jose's Hands, a nonprofit organization that introduces first-year medical school students to medical mission trips.
